Birthday cake candle duty

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 3406 covers candles, tapers and the like. Birthday cake candles fall within this candle family. The table shows different product formats using the same tariff line, rather than separate commodity lines.

The supplied tariff facts show 0% duty for goods from China under 3406 00 00 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspension or attached import control. Budget for import VAT at 20%; zero customs duty does not mean zero VAT. See UK import duty and VAT.

Give your customs broker the composition, photographs and details of any holders supplied with the candles, then confirm the commodity code. For other candle formats, see candles and scented candles.

Specify the candle and its cake-contact parts

Specify straight, spiral, numeral or letter shapes, dimensions, wax composition, wick, colours and decorative coatings. Agree whether holders are included, how firmly they grip the candle and how far the candle or holder enters the cake. Define the assortment and pack contents, and retain an approved sample.

For Great Britain, the general product safety requirement means only safe products may be supplied. Materials intended to touch food must be safe for their intended application. Ask for material details and suitability evidence covering the actual wax, coatings and holders that contact the cake.

Request burn-test results for the final wax, wick and shape combination. Agree checks for lighting, flame behaviour, dripping, stability and extinguishing. Put storage protection and retail instructions into the purchasing specification, including removing candles and holders before serving the cake.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 18 cartons of straight birthday cake candle retail packs under 3406 00 00 00, invoiced at £2,200 free on board, with £1,168 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,368. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,368, so it is £673.60. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Shape and assortment: check dimensions, numeral or letter shapes, colour matching and pack contents against the approved sample.

Burn performance: test production samples for lighting, wick centring, flame behaviour, soot, dripping and stability in the intended holder.

Cake-contact parts: match material records and suitability evidence to the supplied wax, coatings and holders; check for loose decoration, sharp edges and broken stems.

Packing and instructions: check for bent or snapped candles, rubbed coatings, loose holders and legible agreed instructions during quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Thin candles can bend during warm storage or snap where the pack leaves them unsupported. Numeral and letter candles need particular attention at narrow sections and around the holder connection. Trial the packed product through handling and storage, then check arrival stock before releasing it for sale.

A sample can burn differently from production if the factory changes the wick, wax or coating. A holder can also grip poorly or break during insertion. Record the approved materials and fit, require approval before substitutions and investigate discrepancies before accepting the batch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
