Sourcing Benzonitrile from China

Benzonitrile and the related named derivatives shown here have listed UK duties of 0% to 6%, with qualifying suspensions on some derivatives. Confirm the exact substance and code. Chemicals must be correctly labelled and packaged before sale in Great Britain. Cambridge China Bridge sources benzonitrile.

Benzonitrile duty and related tariff lines

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 2926 covers nitrile-function compounds. The supplied data lists 0% duty for goods from China under residual code 2926 90 70 90, the candidate line for unsubstituted benzonitrile. The related named derivatives in the table carry listed rates of 0% or 6%. No anti-dumping or countervailing measures are recorded for these lines.

The named bromo-chloro and nitro-trifluoromethyl derivatives have autonomous suspensions to 0%, excluding mixtures and preparations. The residual line also records a substance-specific suspension and an authorised-use suspension; do not assume benzonitrile qualifies. These lines attach dangerous-chemical export and waste-export controls. The importer should confirm their relevance to the Chinese shipment and any subsequent export with their customs broker.

Confirm the commodity code using the chemical identity, composition and purity rather than the supplier's broad description. Substituted benzonitriles are distinct substances, not grades of benzonitrile. See the wider nitriles guide for other products within the heading.

Specify benzonitrile identity and impurities

State whether you need unsubstituted benzonitrile or a named derivative. Agree the assay method, water content, individual organic impurities, colour and residue limits against your intended process. Ask for a batch certificate of analysis and a representative sample, then trial that sample before accepting the production batch.

Before importing a new substance, consider whether UK REACH registration is required. Consult the site's nitriles guide when preparing questions for HSE about registration, only-representative coverage and the language, cost and timing requirements for safety data sheets. Everyone in the supply chain is responsible for correct labelling and packaging before chemicals reach the Great Britain market.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business order of drum-packed benzonitrile for process trials under 2926 90 70 90, invoiced at £2,500 free on board, with £980 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,480. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,480, so it is £696. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Identity: match the purchase specification, batch certificate, safety data sheet and drum labels to the exact benzonitrile or derivative ordered.

Analysis: independently check assay, water and agreed impurities on a representative delivered sample using the agreed methods.

Packing: check closures, seals, leakage, container condition and batch traceability before releasing stock.

Documents: compare the delivered batch with its certificate and English safety data sheet. Resolve inconsistent chemical names or hazard information before use or supply.

What goes wrong

A high headline assay can hide an impurity that affects your reaction or purification. Water outside the agreed specification, cross-contamination and a certificate belonging to another batch are reasons to hold stock for investigation. Treat these as checks to perform, rather than accepting a supplier's generic purity claim.

Another failure is confusing benzonitrile with a substituted derivative and declaring the wrong tariff line. Keep the chemical identity consistent across the order and shipment documents. Use an agreed sampling plan and the inspection guide to define acceptance before dispatch.

Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on benzonitrile from China?

The supplied tariff data lists 0% for residual code 2926 90 70 90. Confirm that your benzonitrile belongs there. Related named derivatives have listed rates of 0% or 6%, with some suspensions to 0%.

Does benzonitrile need UK REACH registration?

Check your annual quantity and registration coverage. Use the site's nitriles guide to prepare questions, and confirm any UK REACH registration or only-representative arrangements with HSE before ordering.

How do I check benzonitrile purity?

Agree the assay method and separate limits for water and relevant impurities. Compare independent results from the delivered batch with its certificate and your process trial.

Can I use the same code for benzonitrile derivatives?

Do not assume so. The tariff has separate lines for named derivatives, sometimes with purity conditions. Give your broker the exact chemical identity, composition and analysis.
