Sourcing battery-grade copper foil from China
Battery-grade copper foil from China pays 0% UK duty across the relevant heading 7410 lines. The heading covers copper foil no thicker than 0.15 mm, excluding backing; specify the material and backing before choosing the code. Cambridge China Bridge sources battery-grade copper foil.

0% duty on battery-grade copper foil
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 25 October 2026, heading 7410 covers copper foil not exceeding 0.15 mm thick, excluding backing. Other unbacked refined copper foil is listed under 7410 11 00 90. The alloy and backed rows are alternatives only where the supplied material matches those descriptions; they are not interchangeable specifications for ordinary battery foil.
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty for goods from China on every line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. No import controls are listed for the table rows. For 7410 11 00 90, it also lists a 0% autonomous suspension limited to electrolytically manufactured refined copper foil and strips at least 0.015 mm thick, excluding mixtures, preparations and products made up of different components containing them.
Confirm composition, thickness, backing and intended use through finding your commodity code. The separate electrolytic foil line for printed circuit board manufacture should not be selected merely because battery foil is electrolytic. See the wider copper foil and clad laminate guide for other products within this heading.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Other unbacked refined copper foil, including battery current-collector foil | 7410 11 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Unbacked copper alloy foil, where an alloy is specified | 7410 12 00 00 | 0% | None |
| Other backed refined copper foil, where supplied with backing | 7410 21 00 90 | 0% | None |
| Backed copper alloy foil, where an alloy and backing are specified | 7410 22 00 00 | 0% | None |
Specify foil for your battery process
Specify electrodeposited or rolled annealed foil, copper composition, thickness and tolerance, width, roll length, weight per area, tensile strength, elongation and surface roughness. Identify each surface and its treatment. Agree sample test methods and acceptance criteria with the battery production team before approving the production specification.
Ask for the composition of surface treatments as well as the copper. UK REACH restrictions can limit, ban or impose conditions on substances being placed on the market or used. Check the proposed treatment against applicable restrictions before accepting it.
Approve samples through your coating, drying and handling process. Record which surface receives the electrode coating, and agree roll cores, winding direction, moisture protection and lot identification. Use factory verification to assess the supplier's measurement and test capability.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative trial consignment of battery-grade copper foil rolls under 7410 11 00 90, invoiced at £7,760 free on board, with £2,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £9,960. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £9,960, so it is £1,992. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Dimensions: check thickness across the width and along sampled roll lengths, then compare width and weight per area with the agreed specification.
Properties: match roll identifiers to batch certificates for copper composition, tensile strength, elongation and roughness; independently test critical properties.
Surface: inspect for pinholes, wrinkles, oxidation, scratches and contamination, including the surface intended for coating.
Packing: check moisture seals, desiccant, core support and roll-end protection; photograph dents and damaged wrapping before unpacking.

What goes wrong
A description such as battery-grade does not define the foil's acceptance criteria. Uneven thickness, pinholes and wrinkles can make material unsuitable for the buyer's process. Oxidation or an unagreed surface treatment can also change coating performance. Compare delivered rolls with the approved sample and specification rather than relying on the product name.
Poor core support and packing can dent rolls or deform their edges. Keep affected rolls separate, retain their labels and certificates, and record defects before processing. Agree checks before dispatch using the quality inspection guide.
Cambridge China Bridge sources these products for UK businesses, checking the factory and the documents before shipment. See factory verification. For repeat volumes, see container programmes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on battery-grade copper foil from China?
The supplied tariff record shows 0% duty across the relevant heading 7410 lines, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Classification depends on composition, thickness and backing.
Which commodity code should I use for battery copper foil?
Other unbacked refined copper foil is listed under 7410 11 00 90. Confirm the actual material and backing with your customs broker; the PCB-specific electrolytic foil line has a stated end use.
What should a battery copper foil specification include?
Include foil type, composition, thickness tolerance, width, weight per area, tensile strength, elongation, roughness, surface treatment, winding direction and packing. Agree test methods and process trials.
How do I check copper foil when it arrives?
Match roll labels to certificates, sample thickness and mechanical properties, inspect for pinholes and oxidation, and check cores and wrapping for damage before putting rolls into production.
