UK duty on aluminium pipe end caps

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7609 covers aluminium tube or pipe fittings. Ordinary aluminium end caps functioning as pipe fittings are candidates for 7609 00 00 90, the other fittings line. The table shows different connection types under that same code. Confirm the classification of decorative or protective tube covers separately.

The supplied tariff extract records 4% duty for goods from China on every line, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures, suspensions or attached import controls recorded. Its specialist automotive connection-block lines should not be selected merely because an end cap is machined or used in a vehicle.

Specify the cap, connection and sealing face

State whether the cap seals an operating pipe or simply protects an open end. Provide a drawing showing the mating pipe dimensions, cap depth, wall thickness, thread form or connection geometry, sealing face and tolerances. Specify alloy and temper, seal material, coating and the intended fluid and temperature range.

For pressure service, agree working pressure and test requirements with the system designer. Fittings forming part of pressure piping may fall under the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, depending on fluid, pressure and size. Request the applicable conformity evidence rather than treating a fit check as pressure evidence. Where these rules apply, the manufacturer's name and address must be clear, legible and in easily understandable English.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order of 8,000 aluminium pipe end caps; FOB value and freight are illustrative under 7609 00 00 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,200. Duty at 4% is £1,008. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,208, so it is £5,241.60. Inspection checklist

Fit: gauge threads or connection dimensions and trial-fit caps to the actual mating pipe; check engagement and the sealing face.

Material: match alloy and temper certificates to the supplied batch; compare cap depth and wall thickness with the approved drawing.

Sealing: for pressure-service caps, review the agreed pressure-test report and sample-test the assembled connection for leakage.

Finish and arrival: check burrs, cracks, coating damage and distorted rims; reconcile size labels and carton contents with the order. Use the inspection guide to agree checks before dispatch.

What goes wrong

A cap can screw onto a pipe yet fail to seal because the thread form or sealing face differs. A shallow cap can bottom out before the seal compresses. Softer substituted alloy can strip at the thread, while burrs or damaged seal grooves can cut the sealing ring.

Keep the approved drawing and mating-pipe sample with the inspection brief. Check replacement seals and coatings against the intended fluid. Separate protective covers from pressure-service caps in the purchase order and warehouse labels so that a similar-looking cover is not fitted to an operating line.
