Sourcing aluminium grooved couplings from China
Aluminium grooved pipe couplings from China carry 4% UK duty under the other aluminium pipe fittings line, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty. Pressure-system use may bring pressure equipment rules into scope, depending on the application. Cambridge China Bridge sources aluminium grooved pipe couplings.

UK duty on aluminium grooved pipe couplings
Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 2 October 2026, heading 7609 covers aluminium tube or pipe fittings, including couplings. Ordinary aluminium grooved pipe couplings fit the description of other fittings under 7609 00 00 90. The table shows product variants sharing this line, rather than separate tariff classifications.
The supplied tariff record gives 4% duty for goods from China on every line in this heading. It lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duty, suspensions or attached import controls. The specialised automotive connection-block lines should not be selected merely because a component has a groove.
Confirm the housing material, complete assembly and intended use with your broker using finding your commodity code. See the wider aluminium pipe fittings guide. Ask HMRC or your customs broker whether this heading falls within the UK carbon border adjustment mechanism and when any obligations apply; consult the UK CBAM guide when planning later imports.
| Goods | Commodity code | Duty | Anti-dumping or countervailing duty on China |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rigid aluminium grooved pipe couplings | 7609 00 00 90 | 4% | None |
Specify the groove, housing and gasket together
Specify pipe outside diameter, wall thickness, groove profile and tolerances, and whether the pipe groove is rolled or cut. State whether the coupling is rigid or flexible, the required movement allowance, housing alloy and temper, bolt and nut material, tightening instructions and coating. Supply the mating pipe drawing and agree an assembled sample.
Define the fluid, working pressure, temperature range and gasket material. Ask for material certificates and test reports covering the assembled coupling on the specified pipe. Fittings in pressure systems may fall under the Pressure Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016 depending on fluid, pressure and size. Where applicable, attached couplings are included within pressure equipment. Applicable pressure equipment requirements must be met before sale in Great Britain; agree the conformity evidence with the system designer.
Worked duty example
Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 1,200 aluminium grooved pipe couplings under 7609 00 00 90, invoiced at £24,000 free on board, with £1,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £25,200. Duty at 4% is £1,008. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £26,208, so it is £5,241.60. Import taxes total £6,249.60; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,008 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.
Inspection checklist
Groove engagement: measure housing keys and gasket seats against the drawing, then assemble samples on the intended grooved pipe and check engagement around the joint.
Housing and fasteners: check alloy certificates, casting cracks or porosity, coating coverage, bolt fit and nut engagement. Compare production parts with the approved sample.
Gaskets and leaks: check gasket material, moulding defects and seating. Test assembled samples at the agreed pressure using the specified pipe and tightening procedure.
Arrival and traceability: check carton damage, counts, corrosion, mixed sizes and gasket identification. Match batch markings to material certificates and test reports; use the inspection guide to brief the checks.

What goes wrong
A matching nominal pipe size can hide a different outside diameter or groove profile. Housing keys then seat unevenly, while an unsuitable gasket swells, hardens or leaks in service. Porous castings, damaged gasket seats and poorly matched fasteners can also undermine an otherwise correct assembly.
A pressure report for a different pipe, gasket or housing design does not demonstrate your assembly's performance. Keep the approved drawing, sample and test configuration together, and repeat the agreed fit and leak checks when a supplier changes materials or tooling.

Frequently asked questions
What is the UK import duty on aluminium grooved pipe couplings from China?
The supplied tariff record gives 4% under 7609 00 00 90, with no listed anti-dumping or countervailing duty.
Will a coupling fit any pipe of the same nominal size?
Check actual pipe outside diameter and groove dimensions. Agree the groove profile and assemble samples on your intended pipe before approving production.
Do aluminium grooved couplings need pressure equipment evidence?
They may fall within pressure equipment rules as part of a pressure system, depending on fluid, pressure and size. Agree the applicable conformity evidence with the system designer.
What should the factory pressure test?
The assembled coupling with the specified pipe, gasket and fasteners, using the agreed tightening procedure and test pressure. Check that reports identify the tested configuration and batch.
