Sourcing aluminium climbing carabiners from China

Aluminium climbing carabiners from China provisionally classified under the residual aluminium articles line pay 6% UK duty, with no anti-dumping duty shown. For Great Britain, the importer must indicate its name and postal address on the equipment, subject to the permitted packaging exception. Duty and classification

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, heading 7616 covers other articles of aluminium. The residual line 7616 99 90 99 carries 6% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. The table repeats this candidate code for different gate designs; these are product variants, rather than separate tariff subdivisions.

The residual line lists conditional duty suspensions for specified goods, rather than a general suspension for carabiners. It also attaches an import prohibition concerning goods for torture and repression, and an export restriction concerning such goods. Ask your customs broker to confirm the attached controls against the actual product description before declaration.

Confirm the manufacturing method, material and intended use through finding your commodity code. Do not select a cast or hand-made line simply because a supplier calls its production casting or hand finishing.

Gate design, alloy and climbing use

Specify the alloy and heat treatment, body shape, gate opening, nose profile, locking mechanism, finish and declared strengths for the major axis, minor axis and open gate. Agree drawings and tolerances, and identify whether each model is intended for clipping, belaying or another stated climbing use.

Ask for the declaration of conformity, model-specific assessment documents, strength test reports and instructions before approving samples. Match the factory, model and construction to the documents, and confirm certificate authenticity with the issuing body. Arrange testing and certification checks before committing to production.

For Great Britain, the importer must indicate its name, registered trade name or registered trademark and postal address on the equipment. The packaging exception applies where indicating that information on the equipment is not possible. See the fall-arrest harness guide for related harness sourcing.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative small-business batch of aluminium screw-lock climbing carabiners under 7616 99 90 99, invoiced at £3,000 free on board, with £200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £3,200. Duty at 6% is £192. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £3,392, so it is £678.40. Import taxes total £870.40; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £192 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Body and nose: compare dimensions, gate opening and mass with the approved sample; examine the nose, rivet area and rope-bearing surfaces for cracks, burrs and sharp edges.

Gate and lock: operate sampled gates repeatedly, checking alignment and spring return; confirm screw sleeves move freely and automatic locks return fully to their locked position.

Strength evidence: match destructive test samples and reports to the production batch, alloy, heat treatment and gate design; a visual inspection cannot demonstrate breaking strength.

Markings and documents: reconcile model identification, batch identification and declared strengths with the agreed documents; check importer details and the supplied instructions at quality inspection.

What goes wrong

Watch for gates that rub against the nose, locking sleeves that jam, weak spring return, burrs on rope-bearing surfaces and changes to rivets or heat treatment after sample approval. An official climbing-carabiner recall identifies serious injury risk where the gate malfunctions and does not close automatically.

Documents can describe a different factory or model from the delivered goods. Hold suspect batches while discrepancies are investigated. Keep functional checks, document verification and batch strength testing as separate acceptance checks.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on aluminium climbing carabiners from China?

The candidate residual line 7616 99 90 99 carries 6% duty, with no anti-dumping or countervailing duty shown. Confirm classification before ordering.

Can I use a decorative carabiner for climbing?

Specify a model intended for the stated climbing use and obtain matching conformity and strength evidence. Do not approve a decorative clip by appearance alone.

What should I check on automatic-lock carabiners?

Check gate alignment, spring return and complete locking after release. Look for rubbing, sticking and inconsistent operation across the batch.

Does a factory certificate cover every carabiner model?

Check the named manufacturer, model, construction and scope. Confirm authenticity with the issuing body and match the delivered batch to the supporting reports.
