UK duty on AGV platform trucks

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 6 October 2026, heading 8709 covers self-propelled works trucks without lifting or handling equipment for short-distance goods transport on sites such as factories and warehouses, and their parts. The relevant electrical truck and parts lines carry 0% duty from China. The supplied record lists no anti-dumping or countervailing duties and no suspensions for these lines.

The tariff attaches an ozone-depleting-substance restriction, fluorinated-gas import control and waste import control to the truck code. Ask your customs broker to confirm which apply to the China shipment, including the ozone restriction. Imported fluorinated-gas equipment must be labelled. For waste subject to notification controls, the Chinese exporter must apply to its dispatch authority for consent. The record also lists cultural-goods and waste export controls; confirm their relevance with your broker before any re-export.

Specify the fixed deck and operating route

Describe an automatically guided platform truck that carries goods on a fixed deck, without lifting or handling equipment. Agree deck dimensions, usable load, load position, restraints and how goods are placed on and removed from the truck. Give the factory your aisle layout, turns, floor joints, gradients and docking points.

Specify guidance method, loaded speed, stopping behaviour, obstacle detection, emergency stops and recovery after lost guidance or communication. Agree charging arrangements, battery duty cycle, fleet-control interfaces, access to diagnostics and replacement sensors. Request a demonstration using your intended load and route conditions.

For Great Britain, confirm UKCA or CE marking, declaration of conformity and English instruction requirements for complete trucks with the relevant authority. The responsible person must ensure the technical file is compiled and available on request. Match the documents to the supplied truck and configuration; arrange testing and certification checks before shipment.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: 12 electric AGV platform trucks without lifting equipment, illustrative only under 8709 11 90 00, invoiced at £54,000 free on board, with £3,200 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £57,200. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £57,200, so it is £11,440. Inspection checklist

Deck and load: check dimensions, load restraints, chassis condition and agreement with the approved fixed-deck specification.

Guidance and docking: run the agreed route with the intended load, check docking alignment and test recovery from lost guidance or communication.

Stopping and charging: use a controlled test area to check obstacle detection, emergency stops, loaded braking, charging contacts and battery performance.

Documents and support: match truck identification to the declaration and English manual, then check packing damage, diagnostic access and the agreed spares list.

What goes wrong

An empty truck demonstration can conceal poor loaded braking, wheel slip at floor joints or inaccurate docking. A shifted load may obstruct sensors. Changed aisle layouts, reflective surfaces or interrupted communication can expose guidance problems that the factory's demonstration route did not reveal.

Orders also fail when replacement sensors need unavailable configuration tools, charging contacts misalign or the battery cannot support the agreed duty cycle.
