UK import duty on adult unicycles

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, heading 8712 covers bicycles and other non-motorised cycles. Adult unicycles fall within the specific unicycle line, 8712 00 70 10, carrying 14% duty on goods from China. The supplied tariff facts list no anti-dumping or countervailing duty and no suspension for this line. The table shows product variants sharing that code.

The tariff attaches a DCMS Export Licence entry. Official guidance states that importing objects of cultural interest into Great Britain has no licensing requirements. Ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached export entry should be handled for your shipment.

Confirm classification against the actual non-motorised product, rather than a supplier's general cycle description, using finding your commodity code. For the wider heading, see sourcing BMX bicycles.

Specify rider fit and the hub assembly

State whether the unicycle is for learning, freestyle, trials or touring. Fix wheel and tyre dimensions, rim construction, crank length, hub interface, bearing fit, frame material and saddle design. Agree the usable saddle-height range and seatpost insertion marking against the intended adult rider. Record whether a brake is included and how replacement tyres, pedals and bearings will be identified.

UK importers are responsible for consumer product safety, and the general product safety rules aim to ensure that only safe products are supplied in Great Britain. Ask for safety evidence matching the intended use and approved construction. Agree assembly instructions covering pedal orientation, bearing-holder tightening, seatpost insertion and maintenance. Use testing and certification support to define the assessment brief.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative order: 50 adult touring unicycles; illustrative whole-pound FOB and freight values under 8712 00 70 10, invoiced at £9,500 free on board, with £2,003 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £11,503. Duty at 14% is £1,610.42. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £13,113.42, so it is £2,622.68. Import taxes total £4,233.10; a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim the VAT, so the lasting cost is the £1,610.42 of duty. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Wheel: check rim alignment, spoke tension, tyre seating and bearing rotation against the approved sample.

Hub and cranks: check interface fit, crank security, pedal thread orientation and clearance from the frame.

Frame and saddle: check welds, bearing-holder fit, seatpost clamp grip, insertion marking and saddle fastening.

Arrival and assembly: check for bent rims, damaged threads, missing hardware and matching instructions; assemble sampled units and record any binding or looseness.

What goes wrong

A touring sample does not establish suitability for trials use. A changed hub interface, crank material or rim can alter how the unicycle behaves under the intended loading. Keep an approved component list and require proposed substitutions to be reviewed before production.

Overtightened bearing holders can make the wheel bind, while loose cranks or reversed pedal installation can damage interfaces and threads. Poor saddle-height adjustment can leave an adult rider with an unsuitable fit. Check assembled samples before shipment and repeat those checks on arrival. See quality inspection explained.
