Duty on film SLR cameras and related goods

Heading 9006 covers photographic cameras other than cinematographic cameras, plus photographic flash apparatus and relevant parts. Reusable 35 mm film SLR cameras fall within 9006 53 80 00. The related rows cover separately supplied flashes and camera parts; they are not alternative codes for complete SLR bodies.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 1 October 2026, the selected lines carry 0% duty for goods from China, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions recorded. The tariff attaches a cultural-object export licence control. Official guidance says cultural objects have no import licensing requirements into Great Britain; ask your customs broker to confirm how the attached control affects your shipment, particularly for vintage stock or subsequent exports.

Confirm the commodity code from the actual camera specification and separately supplied accessories. Photographic film has its own classification. For the wider heading, see disposable film cameras.

Specify the reflex mechanism and lens mount

Specify a genuine single-lens reflex mechanism, film format, lens mount, body-only or lens-kit supply, focusing screen, metering method and shutter operation. Confirm which functions need batteries and whether the shutter still operates without them. Distinguish newly manufactured goods from refurbished or assembled used stock.

Agree lens compatibility using the actual intended lenses, including aperture operation and meter coupling. Specify shutter settings, flash synchronisation, film advance, rewind and replaceable light seals. Require an approved sample with developed test negatives rather than relying on photographs of the exterior.

Consumer cameras sold in Great Britain must be safe in normal or reasonably foreseeable use. For battery-powered cameras and flashes, confirm with the relevant authority whether waste electrical equipment obligations apply and whether supplied batteries create battery producer obligations. Agree the exact model evidence and supplied battery specification before ordering.

Worked duty example

Illustrative example, not a quote: Illustrative batch of 35 mm film SLR camera bodies under 9006 53 80 00, invoiced at £150,000 free on board, with £3,000 of freight and insurance to the UK. The customs value is £153,000. Duty at 0% is £0. Import VAT at 20% is charged on the customs value plus duty, £153,000, so it is £30,600. With no duty, the only import tax is the VAT, which a VAT-registered importer can usually reclaim. The import duty and VAT guide explains each step.

Inspection checklist

Reflex operation: check mirror movement, return, focusing-screen seating and agreement between viewfinder focus and the developed image.

Shutter and exposure: check the agreed shutter settings, meter response in bright and dim light, aperture actuation and flash synchronisation where supplied.

Film path and seals: load real film, advance and rewind it, then develop it to check frame spacing, scratches, uneven exposure and light leaks.

Condition and contents: check lens-mount play, lens haze or fungus, battery-contact corrosion, strap attachments, serial records, English instructions and the agreed accessories.

What goes wrong

A body can look clean while its shutter sticks, mirror fails to return or deteriorated seals fog the film. A lens may physically attach but fail to operate the aperture or couple to the meter. Scratched negatives and irregular frame spacing expose film-transport defects that empty-camera checks miss.

Keep the approved sample, inspection records and developed negatives together. Compare arrival samples with the agreed specification and record defects before releasing stock for sale. Use quality inspection guidance to define the checks with your inspector.

Frequently asked questions

What is the UK import duty on 35 mm film SLR cameras from China?

The supplied tariff data records 0% duty under 9006 53 80 00, with no anti-dumping or countervailing measures and no suspensions.

How do I check that a film camera is really an SLR?

Confirm that the viewfinder uses the taking lens through a reflex mirror. Inspect mirror movement and compare viewfinder focus with developed test images.

Do battery-powered film SLR cameras bring recycling obligations?

For battery-powered cameras and batteries supplied with them, confirm with the relevant authority whether waste electrical equipment and battery producer obligations apply; establish responsibility before ordering.

Should I buy refurbished film SLR cameras without test negatives?

Ask for developed test negatives from the actual samples. Exterior photographs cannot establish shutter accuracy, light-tightness, focus alignment or film-transport condition.
