Does a test transfer make a supplier safe to pay?
No. A successful small transfer shows that money reached an account, not that the account belongs to your supplier or that goods will arrive. Independently verify the beneficiary, authority to collect payment and unchanged bank details before releasing the balance. Supplier checks in China can be coordinated with Cambridge China Bridge.

Treat the test as a routing check
Distinguish a transfer marked as sent from confirmed receipt. Ask your payment provider what its status actually means. Even confirmed receipt only demonstrates that the payment route worked for that transfer. A dishonest recipient can receive a small payment and acknowledge it accurately.
An acknowledgement, bank screenshot or refund does not establish supplier identity, manufacturing capability or delivery reliability. Do not increase your exposure simply because the test succeeded. Our supplier payment guide covers payment methods and staging; the checks below address the beneficiary before the remaining trial-order payment.
Build a beneficiary record you can verify
Record the seller's registered name, the beneficiary's account name, account number, receiving bank, bank identifier, country and payment currency. Compare the seller with the independently checked business identity, rather than treating matching invoices as independent evidence. Use our supplier verification guide for the underlying company checks.
Ask for bank-issued account details and ask your payment provider what it can independently verify about the account holder. A document supplied by the seller remains unverified until checked through a trusted route. If Chinese and English names differ, obtain a documented link between them and the bank's required beneficiary wording. Do not resolve a mismatch by guessing a translation.
Confirm who is authorised to collect payment
Call a previously verified supplier contact outside the payment email thread. Ask them to confirm the beneficiary details and that payment to this account will be credited against your specific order. For changed details, government fraud guidance recommends confirming both old and new account details using a known phone number, rather than one supplied in the message.
A new supplier may have no trusted contact history. Establish a separate contact route through independently checked company information or an independently arranged factory visit. For an exporter, collection agent or group company, obtain the seller's written collection instruction and independently check the named recipient and relationship. Hold payment if the explanation cannot be verified; a matching invoice and receipt are insufficient.
Compare the actual balance payment with the test
Compare your test-transfer record, verified beneficiary record, current proforma invoice and actual payment screen. Check the account number, account name, receiving bank, country and currency. Ask your provider to explain any intermediary bank or collection account. Our proforma invoice guide explains the seller and bank fields.
Any changed destination needs fresh verification, even if the supplier describes it as an administrative correction. Ask your provider whether it checked the beneficiary name or merely processed the entered details; do not interpret an accepted instruction as proof of account ownership. If the email channel appears compromised, follow our supplier email incident guide.

Release against evidence, then retain the record
Have someone other than the person entering the payment review the beneficiary evidence and final payment screen where your team allows it. Keep the account documents, independent contact source, confirmation notes, test-transfer record and approval together. Release the remaining payment only when discrepancies are resolved and the agreed trial-order payment trigger is met.
Beneficiary verification does not establish that the goods are ready or acceptable. Use our balance-payment checklist for that decision. If the test payment itself appears misdirected, contact your bank immediately and ask whether it can stop or recall it. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help coordinate supplier checks while your business retains payment approval.
Frequently asked questions
Does a successful test transfer prove a supplier is genuine?
No. Confirmed receipt shows that the payment route worked. It does not prove the account belongs to your supplier, that the recipient can manufacture your goods or that the order will arrive.
Is a bank screenshot enough to verify the beneficiary?
No. Treat it as supporting material. Confirm the supplier through an independent contact route and ask your payment provider what it can verify about the account holder.
Can I pay an exporter instead of the factory?
Pause until you have independently checked the exporter and its relationship with the seller. Obtain written confirmation that payment to that named account will be credited against your order.
What if the balance uses different bank details from the test?
Hold the payment and verify the new destination afresh. A successful transfer to the previous account gives you no assurance about the replacement account.
