Buying gift cards: what should I check?
Before paying, confirm expiry, eligible shops and regions, which delivery and import costs the credit covers, and where refunds go. Identify the issuer and check what happens to unused credit if it fails. For help checking the purchasing arrangements, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Identify the issuer and the intended purchase
Record the company issuing the voucher, the business selling it and the seller supplying the goods. Ask which company holds your balance and handles complaints. Distinguish purchased credit from a promotional discount code, and confirm that the card can pay for business stock.
Before buying, ask for written confirmation that your chosen China-sourced product, seller and delivery address qualify. Save the dated terms and the product listing. A card sold through a familiar website should still be checked against the actual issuer and redemption conditions.
Check expiry and regional restrictions
Ask when validity starts: purchase, activation or loading. Check whether topping up or spending changes the expiry date, whether different loads expire separately, and whether the deadline concerns placing an order or dispatch. Ask what happens if stock becomes unavailable before you can spend the balance.
Confirm the permitted country website, account region, currency and delivery destinations. Ask about excluded sellers, product categories, business accounts and promotional combinations. Check whether partial spending and payment of the remainder by another method are allowed. Do not load credit merely to discover whether your intended checkout accepts it.
Separate goods credit from delivery and import costs
Request a checkout breakdown showing goods, delivery within China, international freight, insurance and any destination charges. Ask which lines accept the voucher and which require another payment method. Confirm whether later warehouse or shipping bills can use the same balance.
Ask who will bill any import duty, import VAT, customs clearance and final delivery charges, and whether those bills accept the credit. Do not treat a goods voucher as confirmation that those costs are paid. Use our landed price guide to assemble the full purchasing budget.
Map refunds before committing the balance
Ask separately about cancelling the voucher purchase, cancelling a goods order and returning goods. For each, confirm whether repayment goes to the voucher, the purchaser’s payment card or another account. If payment combines credit and money, request the allocation for a partial refund and a complete cancellation.
Check whether restored credit keeps its old expiry date, receives a new deadline or needs manual reactivation. Ask what happens if the card has expired or the account has closed. For an existing refund-credit dispute, use our marketplace credit guide. For agent-held cash, see wallet withdrawal checks.

Limit the balance exposed to issuer failure
Unused credit may be lost if the issuer fails. Government guidance on consumer prepayments warns that an unsecured claim may produce only a negligible repayment. For business purchasing, ask what protection specifically covers your balance and request the supporting terms. Use our payment safeguarding guide to investigate any protection claimed.
Prefer loading against a confirmed purchase rather than keeping spare funds for possible future orders. Save purchase receipts, activation records, balance statements and written answers outside the issuer’s account. If it stops operating, pause further loads, retain the latest balance evidence and ask your payment provider about available recovery options.
Frequently asked questions
Will topping up extend my gift card expiry?
Ask before loading. Confirm whether the whole balance gets a new expiry date or each load keeps its own deadline, and save the written answer.
Can gift-card credit pay shipping and import charges?
Check each charge separately. Ask which checkout lines accept credit and who bills freight, import duty, import VAT and clearance. Keep another payment method available for excluded charges.
Where does a refund go if I paid with a voucher?
Ask for the refund destination before ordering, including how mixed payments are divided. Confirm the expiry date of any restored credit and what happens if the original card has expired.
What happens to unused credit if the issuer fails?
You may lose the unused balance. Ask what protection applies to your specific card, retain balance evidence and contact your payment provider about possible recovery. Do not budget on a full repayment.
