Price dropped after I paid: can I claim it back?
You may recover the difference under an applicable price-protection promise or an agreed goodwill adjustment. Do not assume a later sale price changes your paid order. Cancelling and buying again needs an eligibility check and a comparison of all costs. Review the order records with Cambridge China Bridge.

Find the promise that covers your purchase
This guide concerns personal purchases from a UK seller, including China-sourced goods. If you usually buy for your business, identify the purpose of this particular order before using consumer cancellation rules. Check the invoice against our seller and agent guide.
Save the voluntary price-protection policy offered when you bought. Check whether it covers the seller’s own later reductions, competitors’ prices, or only matching before purchase. Read the claim window, excluded promotions, eligible buyers and refund method. If no applicable promise is apparent, request a goodwill adjustment and ask for written confirmation.
Prove that the cheaper offer matches
Save dated screenshots of the original order, the cheaper listing and the relevant policy. Capture the page address, seller identity, selected variant, stock availability and checkout total for your delivery address. A search result or headline price may omit conditions visible later.
Compare the model, dimensions, material, colour, pack contents, condition, accessories, warranty and delivery service. Check whether the reduction requires membership, a voucher, a bundle or eligibility you do not have. Similar photographs or a shared Chinese factory do not establish an identical offer. Highlight each match and explain any difference in your request.
Check cancellation eligibility before buying again
For personal distance purchases, ask the relevant consumer protection authority whether cancellation is available before delivery and whether made-to-measure or personalised goods are excluded from change-of-mind cancellation. Our personal-order cancellation guide explains the deadlines, exceptions and separate sourcing-service checks. For a shop purchase, confirm which cancellation rights apply before relying on the same route.
Do not let a price-adjustment discussion consume your cancellation period. If you decide to cancel, send a clear cancellation notice and retain proof. Ask whether the cheaper stock can be reserved, whether its delivery date suits you and whether you can fund the replacement while awaiting repayment.
Compare the saving with the complete switching cost
For a covered statutory cancellation, standard outbound delivery is refundable; an extra amount paid for premium delivery need not be. Return delivery need not be refunded if you were told you would pay it, unless the seller offered to bear it. Obtain the return address and a carriage quote, especially if the proposed return goes to China.
A reimbursement fee is prohibited for a covered statutory cancellation. A deduction for diminished value may apply after handling beyond necessary inspection, but not if the required cancellation-right information was missing. Check our cancellation-fee guide. Compare the expected refund with the replacement checkout total, return carriage and any evidenced deduction. Also check lost discounts, service charges and the practical cost of waiting.

Request an adjustment and record the outcome
Write: “Please review my order against the price-protection promise supplied when I bought. I have attached the policy, payment record and matching offer. Please confirm whether the conditions are met, the adjustment calculation and whether repayment would be money or store credit.” If refused, ask which condition was not met and retain the reply.
If you cancel instead, keep the cancellation, return tracking, replacement order and refund records distinct. Ask for any deduction calculation and check that repayment reaches your account. For an unresolved dispute over a specific promise or refund, use our UK seller dispute guide. Cambridge China Bridge can help assemble the sourcing specifications and order correspondence for comparison.
Frequently asked questions
Can I claim a refund if the price drops after payment?
Check the price-protection promise supplied when you bought and whether your order meets its conditions. If no applicable promise is apparent, ask for goodwill or check whether cancellation and buying again would save money.
What evidence do I need for a price-drop claim?
Keep the original order, payment record, policy and dated cheaper listing. Capture the seller, exact variant, availability, delivery terms and checkout total, including any voucher or membership conditions.
Can I cancel a bespoke order and buy it cheaper?
For genuinely made-to-measure or personalised goods, confirm change-of-mind cancellation rights with the relevant consumer protection authority. Check the specification and ask for an agreed adjustment or cancellation rather than assuming a cooling-off right.
Will cancelling and ordering again save money?
Compare the expected refund with the replacement total, return carriage and any valid diminished-value deduction. Check premium delivery costs, lost discounts and whether you can fund the replacement before repayment arrives.
