Chinese checkout: pounds or foreign currency?

Choose by total card cost, not the currency symbol. Establish whether pounds are the seller's agreed price or a checkout conversion of a foreign-currency price. Compare that conversion with your issuer's rate and fees, and save your currency choice. Discuss unclear supplier pricing with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish what the sterling amount represents

A sterling selling price means the seller offers the goods at an agreed price in pounds. Dynamic currency conversion means a foreign-currency payment amount is converted into your card's billing currency at checkout. A catalogue display in pounds may also be only an estimate. Ask what currency the order is priced in and what currency will actually be submitted to your card.

Look for a foreign-currency base amount, an offered sterling equivalent, an exchange rate and a conversion provider. Their appearance after entering card details is a clue to checkout conversion, but ask for confirmation. An agreed sterling price does not become dynamic currency conversion merely because the goods come from China.

Compare the full cost on your particular card

For checkout conversion, record the final sterling amount and any separately charged conversion fee. For payment in the order's foreign currency, ask your issuer which exchange rate it uses, when it sets that rate and what foreign-currency charges apply to your business card. Convert the same order total using that method, then add charges that are not already included.

Ask whether an overseas merchant charge can apply even when the transaction is in pounds. Check the terms for your actual card rather than assuming a personal card has the same charges. Treat the issuer comparison as an estimate if the settlement rate is not yet known. HMRC publishes rates for duty and import VAT; see customs versus payment exchange rates for that separate purpose.

Make and preserve your checkout choice

Where checkout offers conversion, choose the order's foreign currency if your issuer route is cheaper on the information available. Accept the sterling conversion only if its total cost and certainty suit your purchase. If the seller genuinely prices in pounds, compare that offer with any alternative foreign-currency selling price rather than treating it as a conversion you can simply decline.

Save the order summary and currency-choice screen before confirming payment. Include the amounts, rate, fees, selected option and conversion provider where shown. Check the final confirmation after any redirect. If it contradicts your selection, pause before paying. A warning about an unknown issuer rate is a reason to compare costs, not proof that the sterling option is cheaper.

Challenge conversion you did not accept

Ask your issuer for the original transaction currency and amount, separately from the sterling account debit. A debit in pounds alone does not prove checkout conversion occurred. Match the transaction details against the saved order and selection. If the original transaction was submitted in pounds despite your foreign-currency choice, ask the marketplace or payment provider for its conversion and consent records.

Send the issuer and marketplace a concise complaint: the currency you selected, what was submitted, the conversion you dispute and the supporting screenshots. Ask for correction of the unwanted conversion and associated charges, and ask the issuer whether a card dispute route is available for your business card. Keep payment authorisation separate from conversion consent. Use marketplace card disputes for the wider payment-chain checks.

Check the correction before closing the complaint

Ask whether the proposed remedy is a reversal, a refund or reimbursement of conversion costs. Obtain the currency, amount and treatment of fees in writing. Confirm the status of the original payment before approving a replacement payment, and retain both transaction references if the order is charged again.

Check any returned money against the agreed remedy before closing the complaint. For exchange movements and deductions on a refund, use why a refund can be less in pounds. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can help request clarification of the supplier's selling currency and order documents; direct the card-conversion complaint to the marketplace, payment provider or issuer involved.

Frequently asked questions

Should I pay in pounds on a Chinese marketplace?

First identify whether pounds are the selling price or a checkout conversion. Compare the final sterling option with your card issuer's estimated conversion and all applicable charges.

Is every price in pounds dynamic currency conversion?

No. It may be an agreed sterling selling price or a display estimate. Ask for the order currency and the currency that will be submitted to your card.

Can my card charge a fee if I choose pounds?

Check your card terms. Ask whether an overseas merchant charge applies to sterling transactions, and whether the checkout amount already includes a conversion margin.

What if checkout converted my payment without consent?

Save your currency-selection evidence, obtain the original transaction currency from your issuer and request the provider's consent record. Complain about the conversion and ask the issuer which dispute route is available.
