Can I post dog treats from China to the UK?

Do not assume pet food from China can come by ordinary post because it is for your own animals. The published health-related personal exception requires your pet to travel with you. Ask APHA to confirm the route for the exact ingredients, then obtain carrier acceptance before dispatch. Factory information can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Separate a personal parcel from travelling pet food

For travellers bringing pet food from China into Great Britain, the published guidance says it is prohibited unless needed for health-related reasons. That exception requires the pet to travel with you. It therefore does not establish permission to order food by post for an animal staying at home. Ask APHA for a written answer covering your proposed parcel.

State whether the destination is England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and whether the animals are privately owned or kept by your business. Business-to-business post and parcels are subject to commercial import requirements. Use our import restrictions guide for the wider control check.

Obtain the ingredients behind the product name

Request the complete ingredient list, animal species, ingredient origins, processing method, storage conditions and photographs of the original label. Include meat, fish, milk, eggs, hides, gelatine, fats and flavouring ingredients where present. Ask the factory to explain vague descriptions such as animal derivatives. Describe whether the product is raw, dried, cooked, canned or a chew.

Ask APHA which pet-food or dog-chew import guidance covers that specification and whether China is permitted for the product and ingredients. For processed pet food derived from fish materials, the official guidance restricts imports to countries listed for other fishery products. For a claimed plant-only product, ask about the applicable non-animal feed checks rather than treating the claim as permission.

Check the factory and any claimed exception

Under the dog-chew import guidance, products must come from an establishment approved to export to Great Britain. Obtain the actual manufacturer's name, address and approval details, rather than the online seller's details. Check the relevant official establishment list and ask APHA whether the entry covers the proposed product.

If the supplier claims a personal-use, gift or sample exception, ask for the official provision and written confirmation that it covers this postal shipment. For health-related food, ask APHA about the quantity, packaging, storage and supporting veterinary evidence conditions. Explain explicitly if neither you nor your pet will be travelling. Keep dispatch on hold until the answer covers those facts.

Agree the document and border arrangements

If APHA confirms an import route, ask for the product category, risk category and exact document requirements. Ask APHA whether the shipment requires a health certificate. Ask whether a supplier commercial document, licence or authorisation applies to your shipment instead or additionally. Where the supplier commercial document is required, it must travel with the consignment.

Ask who will make any advance notification, whether an approved border control post is needed and which entry point can handle the product. Have the clearance agent review document drafts against the ingredients, factory, batch and consignee before collection. Our customs clearance documents guide covers the general shipping paperwork; retain the product-specific authority reply alongside it.

Get acceptance for the actual carrier service

Send the carrier the ingredients, processing details, packaging, destination and authority response. Ask for written acceptance by the service you intend to book, including its arrangements for any border presentation and document handling. A booking screen accepting a parcel description is insufficient evidence for your dispatch decision.

Agree what happens if the parcel is held or refused, who handles enquiries and who pays any resulting handling or disposal costs. Describe the contents accurately rather than using a vague label such as pet accessories. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory information and document drafts so you can resolve the authority and carrier questions before shipment.

Frequently asked questions

Can I order Chinese dog treats for my own dog?

Do not dispatch on the strength of personal use alone. Send APHA the ingredients, processing details and postal route, and obtain a written answer plus acceptance from the carrier.

Can prescription pet food be posted from China?

It does not establish permission for a separate postal order. Ask APHA about the exact shipment.

Are plant-based dog chews unrestricted?

Ask for the complete formula, including flavourings and processing aids. Ask the authority which non-animal feed checks apply. Do not use the seller's plant-based description as your clearance decision.

What documents should I ask the factory for?

Start with the full formula, species and origins, process details, label photographs and manufacturer details. After the authority confirms the route, obtain the specified documents and have the clearance agent review them.
