Memorial bench from China: UK park approval
Yes, if the landowner accepts an imported bench for the exact site. Before paying, obtain written approval of the design and inscription, installation arrangements, maintenance responsibilities and removal terms. Factory sourcing and checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether the landowner accepts your own bench
Identify the landowner and the person authorised to approve a memorial in the proposed park or community space. Ask for the current policy, application process and written confirmation that you may supply a bench sourced from China. Midlothian Council, for example, permits only council-supplied benches. Resolve this before commissioning drawings or engraving.
Send a location plan and photographs showing the proposed position, paths and access. Ask whether approval covers the exact location and imported bench, or is only agreement in principle. If outside supply is declined, ask about the landowner's own memorial scheme rather than ordering a bench you cannot place.
Get the complete design accepted
Submit a dimensioned drawing covering the assembled bench, materials, finish, seat and back, armrests, plaque position and fixing points. Ask the landowner to identify its expectations for public use, accessibility, durability and supporting safety evidence. Include the base and surrounding surface so the review covers how people approach and use the seat.
Have the proposed installer review the drawing before production. Specify replaceable slats, fixings and plaque attachments, and agree how spare parts will be obtained. Our garden bench sourcing guide covers the product purchase; this approval file records what the receiving site has accepted.
Approve the inscription as a separate item
Submit the complete wording and a visual proof showing names, dates, punctuation, line breaks, lettering, symbols and plaque material. Ask explicitly whether Chinese text, translated wording, photographs or logos are acceptable. Have someone who reads each language check the proof, and obtain separate written acceptance from the landowner and the customer.
Attach the accepted proof and drawing to the factory order with clear revision identifiers. Require written agreement before changing wording, materials, dimensions or fixings. If the landowner asks for a change after production starts, use our design revision guide to settle affected work and costs before releasing it.
Agree who installs it and accepts the finished work
Confirm who may install the bench and when. Catterick Village Parish Council's policy requires installation at an agreed time by an agreed installer. Ask your landowner whether its own team must do the work or whether it will accept your contractor and an imported bench.
Get written arrangements for foundations, anchors, ground checks, unloading, storage, site access and protection of nearby users. Agree who checks stability, protruding fixings, sharp edges and the finished surface before public use. Record who signs off completion, receives installation photographs and handles defects or a bench rejected on delivery.
Settle maintenance, ownership and eventual removal
Ask who owns the bench and plaque after installation, and who pays for inspections, cleaning, refinishing, loose fixings, vandalism and replacement. Do not assume donation includes upkeep: Hartlepool Borough Council's policy states that no maintenance will be carried out on seats donated under its agreement. Name the custodian, reporting contact and person authorised to arrange repairs or stop use.
Record the agreed permission period, renewal arrangements and grounds for relocation or removal. Ask what notice is given, what happens after an urgent safety removal, and who pays for lifting, storage, disposal and restoring the ground. Agree whether the plaque is returned, how it can be collected and what happens if the donor cannot be contacted. Keep contact details current.

Use the approval file as your payment checkpoint
As a purchasing precaution, hold the deposit until the authorised landowner has accepted the location, drawing, inscription and arrangements for installation, maintenance and removal in writing. Keep that acceptance with the installer’s agreement and factory order. Agree the seller's cancellation and change terms before paying, including what happens if site approval expires or the installation is delayed.
Budget for freight, import charges, delivery, foundations, installation and ongoing care using our landed price guide. Before the balance, compare the actual bench and engraving with the approved files and resolve deviations before shipment. Use our supplier payment checklist for wider checks. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate the agreed factory checks.
Frequently asked questions
Can I import a memorial bench for a UK park?
Yes, where the landowner accepts outside supply and your exact proposal. Ask before ordering: some councils permit only benches they supply themselves.
Can a memorial bench have a Chinese inscription?
Submit the complete Chinese text and visual layout for written acceptance. Have a Chinese reader check the proof before engraving, and ask whether a translation is wanted.
Who maintains a donated memorial bench?
Agree this in writing with the landowner. Name who checks, cleans and repairs it, who pays for damage and replacement, and who may authorise work.
Can the landowner remove my memorial bench?
Ask for the removal and relocation terms before paying. Record notice arrangements, costs, ground restoration and whether the bench or plaque can be returned.
