UK marriage import relief for China-bought goods
Marriage alone does not qualify your goods. Relief is for people moving their main home to the UK because of marriage or civil partnership, subject to residence, goods and import timing conditions. New household goods can qualify under this route. Review supplier records and packing with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether the marriage involves a residence move
Marriage relief covers people moving to or relocating back to the UK because of marriage or civil partnership. The UK must become your main home. Your normal residence must ordinarily have been outside the UK for at least 12 consecutive months before importation. Getting married while continuing to live in the UK does not establish this eligibility.
Prepare a timeline of overseas residence, the move, the ceremony and planned imports. Collect address and travel records for your agent to review. For a move unrelated to marriage, use our ordinary household moving relief guide.
Separate household purchases from wedding presents
Eligible categories include household effects and a bride’s marriage belongings, such as clothing and linen. The ordinary possession requirement does not apply under marriage relief, so newly bought household goods can qualify if the other conditions are met. Alcohol, tobacco and tobacco products are excluded.
Wedding presents can qualify when the giver normally lives outside the UK, but each gift must not exceed £900. Record the giver, recipient, description and value separately from goods you bought yourself. Keep supplier invoices and payment records. Our ordinary parcel gift guide explains the separate private-gift route.
Check the import window before booking freight
The ordinary marriage relief window runs from 2 months before the ceremony to 4 months afterwards. Imports before the ceremony require a guarantee. Check the planned import date with the customs agent; a factory dispatch date alone is not enough to plan the claim.
Ask who will arrange the guarantee and what happens if clearance is delayed. HMRC may consider exceptions where circumstances beyond your control prevent compliance. Its guidance says to complete the residence-transfer application form, explain the circumstances and supply evidence for an exceptional claim. Obtain HMRC’s decision rather than assuming an extension.
Agree the evidence and declaration route
You must be able to provide evidence of the marriage or civil partnership. Ask your agent which ceremony documents they will accept, including evidence of the planned ceremony for an import before marriage. Match names across those documents, residence records, invoices and the packing list.
HMRC’s marriage guidance says the ordinary residence-transfer application form is unnecessary for the usual marriage route and identifies specific customs procedure codes. Before shipment, ask the agent to confirm the applicable code, evidence submission and treatment of both duty and VAT. Use our customs document guide to organise the shipment file.

Keep excluded goods and later transfers under review
Goods granted marriage relief cannot be lent, used as security, hired out or transferred to another person within 12 months of importation. Record the import date and check with HMRC before changing ownership or use. This period starts at importation, so do not substitute your moving date.
Keep the final declaration, supporting evidence and inventory together. Separate uncertain goods before packing and budget for ordinary treatment where relief conditions are not met, using our personal-purchase import tax guide. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can help match supplier records to the packed goods for your customs agent’s review.
Frequently asked questions
Does getting married make my China furniture tax-free?
Marriage alone is insufficient. The relief concerns moving your main home to the UK because of marriage or civil partnership, with residence, goods, evidence and import timing conditions.
Can newly bought household goods qualify?
Yes, potentially. The ordinary possession requirement does not apply to marriage relief. Check the residence move, eligible goods, evidence and import window before relying on it.
What is the wedding-present value limit?
HMRC’s marriage guidance limits each gift to £900 and requires the giver to normally live outside the UK. Keep evidence of the giver and each gift’s value.
How soon before or after the wedding can I import?
Ordinarily, from 2 months before the ceremony to 4 months afterwards. Imports before the ceremony require a guarantee. Ask HMRC about exceptional circumstances before assuming a different deadline.
