Getting started

Importing a large aquarium: what should I check?

Before ordering, obtain approved glass and joint drawings, a matched stand specification and a complete filled-weight calculation. Have a structural engineer assess the intended floor location, then agree documented factory and arrival leak tests with safe drainage. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory checks through its staff in China.

Agree the glass and structural joint specification

Ask for a drawing showing panel dimensions, glass type and thickness, edge finish, bracing, holes and intended water height. Have an aquarium designer justify the specification for the complete assembly. Clearer glass, a thicker panel or a photograph of a similar tank does not establish suitability. Record approved tolerances and prohibit unapproved substitutions.

Specify the silicone manufacturer and product, structural bond width and thickness, surface preparation and curing conditions. Obtain confirmation that the sealant suits aquarium construction and continuous immersion, including compatibility with livestock. Distinguish the load-bearing bond between panels from the visible internal sealing bead. Ask the inspector to record chips, cracks, gaps, voids and separation against the approved specification.

Match the stand to the tank design

Obtain a stand drawing and evidence of capacity for the complete operating load. Check frame stiffness, connections, corrosion protection, cabinet materials and resistance to water exposure. Confirm the required support pattern with the tank designer: a framed base and an unframed base may need different contact arrangements. Use a support mat only where specified.

Agree how the stand will be assembled, levelled and checked for flatness without twisting the tank. All intended feet or bearing surfaces should carry load as designed. Do not correct gaps by wedging directly beneath the glass. Check access to plumbing and maintenance points, and plan the delivery route and lifting method using our oversized and heavy imports guide.

Calculate filled weight and assess the actual floor

Prepare a weight schedule covering the tank, stand, operating water volume, filtration sump, reservoirs, substrate, rocks and equipment. Calculate water mass using the intended water type and its density, then add the other components without counting displaced water twice. Include the heaviest intended operating configuration. Give the engineer the stand footprint and actual foot or rail contact positions.

Have a structural engineer assess the proposed location before purchase, including joists or slab, spans, condition, concentrated loads and deflection. A room-average load calculation or placing the tank near a wall is insufficient evidence. England's Approved Document A addresses building structure; ask the engineer to identify guidance relevant to your location. Obtain written recommendations for positioning or strengthening before filling.

Agree a controlled factory leak test

Write a test brief identifying the actual tank, approved support, sealant cure evidence, staged filling sequence, operating water height, observation period and acceptance criteria. Let the designer and sealant instructions determine the timing. Use a location with verified load capacity, controlled access and a safe drainage plan. Keep livestock out and protect electrical equipment from water.

Inspect dry joints first, then monitor seams, panel movement, stand stability and plumbing throughout filling and the agreed hold. Record water levels, times, photographs and findings; a falling level alone does not distinguish leakage from evaporation. Agree stop criteria for leakage, cracking, joint separation or unexpected movement. Drain safely and obtain specialist review before repairs or retesting. Use our inspection guide to commission the report.

Protect the tank and repeat checks after delivery

Agree crating that protects glass edges, bracing and fittings and prevents movement during handling. Record the tank's condition before packing and identify it in the test report. Obtain unpacking and lifting instructions, including approved lifting points. Our glass packaging guide covers packaging qualification; a passed leak test does not demonstrate that the tank will survive transport.

On arrival, photograph the crate and inspect the unpacked glass, joints and stand before accepting installation. Repeat the controlled leak test after transport on approved support in a suitable location, then check the final installation under staged load. If plumbing includes a sump, verify safe water containment when the return pump stops. Retain the drawings, weight schedule, floor assessment and test records before adding livestock.

Frequently asked questions

How thick should the glass be for a large aquarium?

Ask an aquarium designer to specify thickness using panel dimensions, water height, glass type, bracing, holes and joint design. Do not choose it from tank volume alone.

Can I put a large aquarium upstairs?

Have a structural engineer assess the exact location, complete operating weight and stand contact points before ordering. An upstairs location cannot be approved from tank size alone.

Can I use an ordinary cabinet as an aquarium stand?

Use it only after its capacity, stiffness, water resistance and support pattern have been verified for the tank. A general furniture load rating does not establish compatibility.

How long should I leak-test an imported aquarium?

Agree the duration with the tank designer using the sealant's curing instructions and the intended water height. Record staged filling and observations, and repeat checks after transport.
