Getting started

Can a GB business join UKIMS without NI premises?

Yes. A GB-established business can apply for UKIMS without Northern Ireland premises if its customs operations and accessible records are in the UK and it has an indirect customs representative in Northern Ireland. Compliance and evidence conditions also apply. China-side sourcing support is available from Cambridge China Bridge.

Establishment does not require your own NI premises

HMRC provides an application route for businesses established elsewhere in the UK. A company incorporated at Companies House is UK-established for customs purposes. A UK VAT or EORI number alone does not establish that status. Prepare your incorporation certificate and a clear description of where your business operates.

Arrange indirect representation before applying

For the GB route, customs operations must take place in the UK, records must be accessible in the UK, and you must have an indirect customs representative in Northern Ireland. Confirm that the agent accepts that role. Read appointing a customs agent before agreeing the appointment.

HMRC says to enter the representative’s Northern Ireland address on the application. If using the Trader Support Service, its customer number is sufficient instead. Ask who will handle queries and how shipment documents will reach them.

Use the appropriate EORI

A business established outside Northern Ireland can apply with a GB or XI EORI. Use XI if you have one. If you are not entitled to XI and hold a GB EORI, use GB. Check the applicant’s company identity against its EORI records; preparing a GB EORI before shipment covers the registration stage.

Prepare the business and goods evidence

Gather establishment evidence, business and responsible-person details, turnover information, intended goods use and an explanation of your controls. HMRC assesses customs and tax compliance, relevant serious criminal offences, financial standing and understanding of the scheme. Explain your actual recordkeeping system and how it tracks goods from import to final sale or use.

For China-sourced orders, connect factory references, purchase orders, invoices and delivery records in a sample shipment file. Flag any planned processing in Northern Ireland: additional processing requirements apply. Cambridge China Bridge’s staff in China can help gather factory and shipment documents. For route planning, see importing directly into Northern Ireland.

Apply online and plan around authorisation

Apply through HMRC’s online service. You can save your application and return later. An acknowledgement confirms receipt; approval brings a letter with your authorisation number. You cannot use the authorisation for goods moved before its authorisation date. Keep the application contact available to answer HMRC’s follow-up questions.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Northern Ireland warehouse for UKIMS?

No. A GB-established business can use HMRC’s route for businesses outside Northern Ireland, provided it meets the UK customs operations, accessible records, indirect representation and other scheme conditions.

Can I apply for UKIMS with a GB EORI?

Yes, if established outside Northern Ireland. Use XI if you have one; if you are not entitled to XI and hold a GB EORI, use GB.

Can the Trader Support Service represent me?

HMRC identifies the Trader Support Service as an indirect representative option. If using it, provide your customer number on the application.

Can UKIMS cover shipments made before approval?

You cannot use your authorisation for goods moved before its authorisation date. Check that date in the approval documents before planning a movement.
