Can I import a trailer or caravan from China?
Yes, if the exact trailer is suitable for lawful road use and your towing vehicle. Establish its approval route before ordering, match the chassis identity to the documents, and check loaded weights, brakes and lights. Registration for overseas journeys is a separate check. Discuss the factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Establish the approval route before ordering
The Individual Vehicle Approval scheme includes imported trailers. Before paying a deposit, send the completed specification and any existing approval documents to a UK trailer approval specialist. Ask whether the existing approval evidence is acceptable or an individual inspection is needed. Describe the private use, manufacturing history and intended towing vehicle. This guide focuses on Great Britain; request separate advice for Northern Ireland.
Ask for a written list of missing evidence, required modifications and checks before shipment. Treat a supplier’s claim of UK suitability as something to verify. Our electric food truck guide addresses powered catering vehicles; establish a trailer-specific route for this purchase.
Match the documents to the actual chassis
Collect the manufacturer’s name, model, build date, chassis identification, plate photographs, gross weight and unladen weight. Photograph the identification stamped on the chassis as well as any attached plate. Ask the approval specialist to reconcile these with the approval documents and completed body specification. Keep the invoice, drawings and inspection photographs together.
Put the agreed chassis, axles, coupling, brakes, tyres and lighting into the product specification. Ask the factory to seek your agreement before substituting parts. Use our test report verification guide to check that supporting reports cover the components and configuration being supplied. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can inspect the physical identification and agreed specification.
Check compatibility with the towing vehicle
Use the car’s handbook and identification plate to establish its towing limits. The fully loaded car and trailer must not exceed the gross train weight. GOV.UK says you should not tow if the car’s identification plate has no train weight. Trailer width is limited to 2.55 metres. For a towing vehicle with a maximum authorised mass of 3,500kg or less, trailer length is limited to 7 metres, excluding the connecting frame.
Ask a towing specialist to check loaded trailer weight, axle loads, coupling load, towbar suitability, coupling height and electrical connections against the actual car. Include luggage, water, batteries and fitted equipment in the loading assessment. Confirm your driving licence entitlement and insurance cover before arranging collection. Ask for a workable loading plan rather than relying on an empty trailer weight.
Specify brakes and lighting before production
A trailer weighing over 750kg when loaded must have a working brake system. Any fitted brakes must be in good working order, and a breakaway cable or secondary coupling must be used. Have a specialist check the complete braking arrangement and its compatibility with the towing vehicle. Request component identification, supporting technical evidence and installation instructions before accepting the factory’s design.
Ask the approval specialist to specify the required lamps, reflectors, positions and markings for this trailer. Obtain a wiring diagram and check every lighting function using the intended towing vehicle. GOV.UK’s towing checks say lights should be undamaged and working correctly. Agree how faults will be corrected before shipment, then arrange a physical check after arrival and before road use.

Check registration against the whole journey
GOV.UK’s trailer registration guidance says trailers used only in the UK do not need that registration. The trailer must still display the towing car’s registration number. For overseas trips, current guidance requires all trailers over 750kg to be registered for travel to or through most European countries, apart from Ireland, Cyprus, Malta and Spain. Check every transit country, including on journeys to a listed exception.
Where overseas trailer registration applies, the trailer needs its own registration plate and a trailer registration certificate available for inspection. The application asks for manufacturer, trailer type, chassis identification, gross weight and unladen weight. Keep this process separate from approval and towing checks. For customs costs, use our import duty and VAT guide; ask your customs agent to classify the actual trailer.
