Getting started

Can I order a headstone from China for a UK cemetery?

Yes, provided the cemetery accepts the proposed memorial and an accepted local mason agrees to install it. Before paying, obtain written approval for the drawing and inscription, and agree the fixing details, delivery arrangements and installation cost. Factory sourcing and checks in China can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with the exact cemetery and grave

Contact the burial authority or cemetery office with the cemetery name, grave reference and section. Ask for its current memorial rules, application form, permitted installation timing and confirmation of whose signature is needed. For a churchyard, ask the office responsible for that burial ground which approval process applies.

Dover District Council expressly requires approval before a memorial is erected. Treat written acceptance of your exact proposal as a purchasing checkpoint: ask whether the reply is preliminary guidance or permission to proceed. Keep the approved drawing, inscription and correspondence together.

Turn the cemetery's limits into a factory drawing

Ask the cemetery to confirm permitted height, width and thickness, how height is measured, and whether the base and plinth count towards it. Also check the grave type, stone material, colour, finish, shape, kerbs, vases and photographic plaques. Do not use a neighbouring memorial as your specification.

Have the installer review a dimensioned drawing showing the headstone, base, foundation interface and fixing holes before the factory cuts stone. Agree tolerances that keep the finished assembly within the accepted limits. Use our granite memorial sourcing guide for the product purchase alongside this cemetery acceptance checklist.

Approve the inscription before engraving

Send the complete inscription and artwork to the cemetery with the proposal. Dover District Council reserves the right to refuse unsuitable wording. Ask specifically about language, symbols, photographs and any identification marking, rather than assuming approval of the stone also approves its lettering.

Obtain a final visual proof showing names, dates, punctuation, line breaks, lettering position and decorative details. Have the customer check the text and the installer check its placement. Identify the approved proof in the order, and tell the factory to stop for written agreement before making any change.

Secure an accepted installer before paying

Ask the cemetery to confirm that your proposed local memorial mason may carry out the work there. Swindon's Kingsdown regulations restrict bringing in or erecting a memorial to an approved stone mason. Ask your cemetery which registration, fixing practice, insurance evidence and permit arrangements it expects.

Get the mason's written agreement to install an imported memorial made elsewhere. Send the drawing and stone details, then agree responsibility for foundations, anchors, drilling, unloading, storage and installation. Ask what would cause the mason to reject the delivered stone and who would handle remedial work. Pause the purchase if no accepted installer will take it.

Make payment depend on a usable memorial

Before a deposit, assemble the written cemetery approval, accepted drawing, signed inscription proof and installer's agreement. Ask for a complete delivered and installed cost covering freight, import charges, unloading, storage, cemetery fees and local work. Use our landed price guide to compare quotations on the same basis.

Before the balance, inspect the actual memorial against that approved file, including dimensions, lettering, finish, cracks, chips and fixing holes. Agree protective crating and safe lifting arrangements with the installer and carrier. Our supplier payment checklist covers the wider payment checks. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate the agreed factory checks.
