Separate the display from the jewellery checks

This guide covers the information customers see when you sell precious-metal jewellery. For the goods themselves, use the jewellery sourcing guide and the guide to arranging UK hallmarking.

Before ordering, assign someone to check the shop notice and someone to check the online presentation. Ask your supplier for clear photographs of the actual jewellery and its marks so your retail team can prepare explanations against the stock you intend to sell.

Use the approved notice in your shop

Dealers supplying precious-metal items must display the notice explaining approved hallmarks in the form produced by the British Hallmarking Council. Put it where customers can see it.

Use Notice A for the shop display. Keep it complete, unaltered, legible and in black and white. For the downloadable PDF, the guidance specifies minimum 300dpi printing and A4 size. Position the finished notice beside the jewellery display, then check it from the customer’s side.

Choose the permitted online presentation

GOV.UK guidance requires prominent online hallmarking information. It permits Notice A or Notice B. Notice B is available as a PDF or short film for online sales platforms where a dedicated hallmarking page is not required.

Choose a format your selling platform can display clearly. Check the published result on a phone and a computer: can a customer find it while browsing jewellery, read the document or play the film? Treat these as practical checks, rather than a prescribed website layout.

Get the official file and check publication

Obtain Notice A or the online Notice B from an Assay Office. Download the official asset rather than asking the factory or a designer to recreate it.

Keep the downloaded file, a photograph of the shop display and screenshots of the online presentation together. Recheck after a website redesign or shop refit. If you also buy components, use the jewellery findings guide for the separate material and specification checks.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a Dealer’s Notice for imported jewellery?

Yes, when supplying precious-metal items: the approved notice must be displayed where shop customers can see it. Online retail also needs prominent hallmarking information.

Can I use a film instead of an online notice?

Yes. GOV.UK permits Notice B as a PDF or short film for online sales platforms where a dedicated hallmarking page is not required.

Can I add my logo to the shop notice?

The guidance requires Notice A to be reproduced in its entirety without amendments, additions or deletions. Keep your branding separate.

Where do I get the official Dealer’s Notice?

From an Assay Office. Notice A is available to download for shop display; Notice B is available as a PDF or short film for online use.
