Getting started

Can I give or lend prototypes to friends?

Do not give or lend prototypes to friends while applicable safety requirements remain unresolved. Free supply and loans can be covered, and finished products for consumer testing must comply when tested. Get the trial reviewed before handover. Factory evidence can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Check whether your trial constitutes supply

For manufactured products covered by government market-placement guidance, commercial supply can be free of charge, and loans can transfer possession. Treat a trial organised to develop your business's product as a supply question needing review. Friendship, retained ownership and a promise to return the sample should not be your basis for proceeding.

Write down who provides the product, who uses it, where, and whether it is a gift, loan or supervised session. This guide concerns non-cosmetic products in Great Britain; check Northern Ireland separately. See our own-use import guide for equipment brought into use without resale, and our cosmetic prototype guide for cosmetics.

Separate development testing from consumer use

Government guidance distinguishes products undergoing manufacture-stage testing or pre-production validation from fully manufactured products intended for consumer testing. The latter must meet applicable requirements when consumer testing takes place. Do not assume that calling a finished, usable sample a prototype puts it into the development category.

While safety questions remain open, gather feedback through drawings, photographs or a non-functional mock-up reviewed for the proposed handling. Keep functional investigation with a competent specialist under an agreed test brief. Ask for a written explanation of how the proposed activity is classified before allowing friends to operate or take home the product.

Settle the safety duties before release

The general product safety rules in Great Britain cover products intended for, or reasonably likely to be used by, consumers. Product-specific safety provisions may apply instead for the risks they cover. Manufacturers and importers need to demonstrate compliance with relevant regulations and safety requirements before market placement. Ask which rules, assessments, documents and markings apply to this exact product.

Choose an adviser with relevant product experience, and use a solicitor where legal scope is disputed. Send the proposed trial arrangements, materials, components, instructions, photographs and existing reports. Ask for the unresolved hazards, further work and release conditions in writing. Our technical compliance file guide helps organise the evidence; participant enthusiasm cannot establish safety.

Write a controlled feedback plan

After the required safety work is complete, identify the released version and each sample. Use our product specification guide to keep the factory and reviewer working from the same configuration. Record permitted users, tasks, locations, supervision, instructions, return arrangements and a named person who can stop the trial.

Keep a participant-to-sample record and give each participant a contact route. Explain the permitted use and ask them not to pass the sample on, modify it or attempt repairs. Separate questions about appearance, comfort and usability from faults, near misses and injuries. Agree practical stop triggers with the adviser, such as unexpected heat, breakage or unstable operation.

Respond to concerns and review changes

If a safety concern appears, stop the affected activity, contact participants and arrange safe recovery of the samples with your adviser. Keep photographs, sample identifiers and incident descriptions. Government guidance requires immediate notification to local Trading Standards when safety risks or consumer incidents are identified after market placement; do not wait for the feedback exercise to finish.

Close the trial against the released version. Send proposed material, component or instruction changes back to the reviewer before another handover. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory documents, clarify sample configurations and coordinate agreed changes. Keep the technical conclusions and your business's release decision recorded separately from preference feedback.

Frequently asked questions

Can I give free prototypes to friends before safety testing?

Do not hand them over while applicable safety requirements remain unresolved. Free commercial supply can be covered, and finished products for consumer testing must comply when tested.

Does lending a prototype avoid product safety rules?

Do not rely on retaining ownership. Government guidance includes loans as transfers of possession. Have the product and trial arrangements reviewed before handover.

Can friends give feedback without using the prototype?

Use drawings, photographs or a non-functional mock-up reviewed for the proposed handling while safety questions remain open. Agree the activity with your adviser and keep functional testing controlled.

Who should review a prototype feedback trial?

Use a product compliance specialist with relevant experience, a competent engineer for technical hazards, and a solicitor for disputed legal scope. Provide the exact sample version and proposed trial plan.
