Freight Forwarder China to Indonesia: Routes and Costs
A freight forwarder from China to Indonesia arranges cargo collection, transport and agreed clearance or delivery services. Compare providers using their route, Indonesian destination partner, itemised shipment costs and written responsibilities. Request FCL, LCL and air quotations using the same packed cargo details and delivery address.

Start with the delivery address and importer
Whether you are an individual buying equipment, a small business combining supplier orders or a larger importer replenishing stock, start with the goods, packed dimensions, gross weight, collection address and final delivery address. Ask for a door-to-door quotation if that is the budget you need.
For buyers purchasing from China, establish the destination importer, check product requirements and compare the complete transport scope. This page focuses on Indonesia. If you are based elsewhere but send goods directly to Indonesia, establish who will import them there.
Before paying for freight, read buying from China to Indonesia for an overview of import requirements. Confirm the intended importer's and product's eligibility separately from the forwarder's agreement to collect cargo.
Which Chinese origins and Indonesian ports should you compare?
Ask for the Chinese loading port, Indonesian discharge port, actual terminal and any transshipment hub. Select the route against the factory location and final delivery address rather than assuming Jakarta is best for every order.
CMA CGM's Indonesia service page lists China connections to Jakarta, Surabaya and Semarang, and connections through Singapore serving Belawan. SITC's terminal list identifies the corresponding port names. Neither page displays a publication date. Both were checked on 18 October 2026; confirm the service and terminal for your booking.
| Gateway | Published connection | Booking question |
|---|---|---|
| Jakarta — Tanjung Priok | CMA CGM lists a direct China–Jakarta–Surabaya service. | Which Chinese loading port and Jakarta terminal does the quotation cover? |
| Surabaya — Tanjung Perak | Surabaya appears on the same published China service. | How does the complete delivery cost compare with routing through Jakarta? |
| Semarang — Tanjung Emas | CMA CGM lists direct connections from Hong Kong, Nansha and Shekou, plus a Singapore connection. | Is the offered shipment direct or transshipped? |
| Belawan | CMA CGM describes connections through Singapore and its wider network. | Which hub, connecting sailing and destination terminal are included? |
Sea FCL, sea LCL or air: compare the complete shipment
FCL means full-container load. Obtain a quotation for a dedicated container and confirm collection, loading arrangements, terminal handling and delivery. Compare the total cost against LCL for your actual cargo.
LCL means less-than-container load: goods can share a container with other shipments. Check the charging basis, minimum charge, warehouse handling and destination release costs. Maersk's published LCL terms allow calculation in cubic metres or weight-and-measure units; the latter compare gross volume with gross weight using the stated conversion. Ask your provider to show its calculation.
Consider an air-freight quotation when delivery is urgent. Maersk's chargeable-weight guidance, dated 10 March 2025, explains that actual and volumetric weight are compared and the higher is used. Ask which formula, rounding and minimum charge apply to your shipment.
For the packing, warehouse and shared-container process, use how LCL shipping from China works. For orders from several suppliers, discuss consolidation before arranging separate collections.
How long will shipping take?
Obtain a dated schedule for the named sailing or flight rather than relying on a general China-to-Indonesia estimate. The cited service descriptions do not establish a door-to-door transit range, so this guide gives no numerical transit promise.
Ask the forwarder to separate collection and cargo acceptance, consolidation where applicable, departure, main carriage, hub transfer, destination availability, customs clearance and final delivery. Request a delivery estimate separately from the vessel's arrival estimate.
Before booking, establish the cargo and document cut-offs, whether the schedule is estimated or guaranteed under the contract, and what happens if cargo misses a departure or connection.
What should a China-to-Indonesia freight quotation include?
Request a shipment-specific quotation using the cargo details, route, service scope and booking date. Ask for its validity period, currency, charging units, minimum charges and exclusions.
Maersk's published rate-request terms state that additional charges, including local charges, can apply. Use the checklist below to ask what your own provider includes; it is not a claim that every line applies to every shipment.
| Cost line | What to confirm |
|---|---|
| China collection and origin handling | Factory collection, warehouse receiving, consolidation, packing, loading, export documentation and terminal handling. |
| Main transport | Ocean or air freight, charging basis, routing and applicable fuel or other surcharges. |
| Indonesia destination handling | Terminal or warehouse handling, LCL unpacking, document release and other local charges. |
| Customs services | Who prepares the declaration, what the brokerage fee covers and what happens if additional work is required. |
| Import duties and taxes | Who calculates and pays them, the basis used and whether the quote includes them or excludes them. |
| Final delivery | Exact delivery address, unloading arrangements and any access or waiting charges. |
| Insurance and contingencies | Cargo cover, exclusions, excess, storage, container demurrage or detention, and the applicable free-time terms. |
Indonesian importer requirements and documents
Indonesian Customs' registration guidance treats importers and exporters as meeting customs-registration requirements once they hold an NIB functioning as business registration, importer identification and customs access. Confirm that the intended importer's NIB has the required functions before dispatch.
Its imports-for-use guidance lists supporting documents including invoices, packing lists, bills of lading or air waybills, goods-identification documents and applicable import-compliance documents. The importer is responsible for calculating and paying the import duties, excise and import taxes due under the self-assessment procedure.
These summaries do not cover every import procedure. Individuals should ask which procedure applies to their goods and intended use. See buying from China to Indonesia for an overview of import requirements.
Before approving shipment, reconcile the seller and buyer details, consignee, goods descriptions, quantities, packaging, weights and values across the documents. Ask the destination customs representative to identify any product-specific documents before collection.
How to choose a forwarder and avoid common problems
Ask who contracts with you, who issues the transport document and who handles the shipment in Indonesia. Obtain the destination contact and a written division of responsibilities for collection, export arrangements, import declaration and delivery.
Request evidence of experience with your product and chosen destination. Disclose batteries, liquids, fragile goods, oversized items or other special characteristics before accepting the quotation; obtain written confirmation that the proposed service accepts the cargo.
Compare quotations using the same packed measurements, route and delivery scope. Seek clarification if destination charges, import taxes or delivery are unanswered. Read how to choose a freight forwarder in China for the detailed selection process.
For a vague all-inclusive offer, ask who the importer will be and which declaration and payment records you will receive. Correct conflicting documents before dispatch. Retain packing lists and measurement evidence for any remeasurement dispute. For delays or damage, request written status updates and check the applicable claims requirements and deadlines.
If requesting supplier consolidation from Cambridge China Bridge, use the consolidation service enquiry to ask about receiving, checking, repacking and dispatch. Confirm the available services, storage, insurance and destination handling in writing before booking.

UK example: why customs value and VAT need separate checks
For a separate UK import, HMRC's delivery-cost guidance, updated 15 April 2026, requires relevant transport, loading, handling and insurance costs up to the place of introduction into the UK customs territory to be included in customs value.
HMRC's import VAT valuation guidance, updated 26 September 2025, starts with customs value and adds applicable import duties and charges, excluding import VAT itself, plus relevant incidental expenses to the first UK destination and a further UK destination known at importation. Avoid counting expenses already included twice.
This is a UK illustration only. Do not use it to determine Indonesia's valuation rules, tax rates or importer requirements.

Frequently asked questions
Can a freight forwarder collect from several Chinese suppliers?
Ask for a consolidation quotation covering each collection, warehouse receiving, identification, storage and dispatch. Confirm whether checking or repacking is included and who approves the final packing list.
Should I ship to Jakarta or a port nearer my delivery address?
Compare the complete route and inland delivery cost. Ask for a quotation through the relevant gateway, including Surabaya, Semarang or Belawan where suitable, and confirm whether the offered connection requires transshipment.
Is LCL always cheaper than a full container?
Compare shipment-specific LCL and FCL quotations for the same cargo, including origin handling, destination charges and delivery. Ask each provider to explain its charging basis and minimum charges.
How many days does freight from China to Indonesia take?
Ask for a dated schedule for the named service and a separate delivery estimate. Confirm the expected dates for port arrival, cargo availability, customs release and delivery. The cited service descriptions do not establish a door-to-door transit range.
Does a door-to-door price include Indonesian duties and taxes?
Ask for written confirmation. The quotation should identify the importer, customs services, duties and taxes, delivery scope and exclusions rather than leave these to the phrase door-to-door.
Can I import as an individual?
Establish which customs procedure applies to your goods and intended use before booking. Do not assume the published business-import registration process or a personal-consignment procedure automatically fits your purchase.
What paperwork should I prepare before collection?
Prepare an accurate commercial invoice and packing list, agree the transport-document details, and have the destination customs representative identify any applicable product documents. Keep the descriptions, parties, quantities and values consistent.
What should I send to get a usable freight quote?
Send the product description, packed dimensions, gross weight, package count, collection and delivery addresses, readiness date, agreed purchase terms and any special cargo characteristics. Ask for itemised inclusions and exclusions.
