How to export pianos from the UK to China
To export pianos to China, agree the Chinese tariff line with the importer, check whether an electronic keyboard needs CCC, and arrange the UK export declaration. MFN duty is 10% or 12% by line, with import VAT adding to landed cost. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Match the instrument to its import route
Pianos and musical instruments need product-specific classification before you agree a shipment. Upright and grand pianos fall under HS 920110 and 920120; electrically produced or amplified keyboard instruments fall under HS 920710. The CCC reference table includes electronic keyboards under 9207100000, so send the importer the exact model specifications before committing to the import route.
For UK exports under HS 9201-9208 (12 subheadings): HMRC recorded £1.5m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 12 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £2.0m, -23.3%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £906k.
January to July 2026: £622k against £738k in the same months of 2025 (-15.8%). These are UK exports under the same HS codes. The largest UK export line to mainland China in 2025 was 92012000 Grand pianos £970k. Use that distinction when discussing a piano range with an importer; the combined figures cover several instrument types.
Resolve electronic keyboard certification before shipment
The CCC reference table matches electronic keyboards to 9207100000 and notes third-party certification or self-declaration evaluation. Have the importer establish the applicable route for the exact model with the relevant certification body or authority before shipment. Where approval is required, it takes months, not weeks, and the Chinese authority decides. Treat the commodity-code match as a reason to check the product’s scope.
Use the Chinese tariff line to price the shipment
The verified Chinese tariff lines have 10% MFN duty for the listed acoustic and mechanical instruments, and 12% for 92071000 and 92079000. HS 920590 splits into several Chinese tariff lines. Agree the precise line with the importer before quoting, because duty and import VAT add to landed cost and shape the price the importer can offer.
The VAT Law sets a standard import VAT rate of 13%, subject to its reduced-rate list and special rules. Import VAT is calculated on customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax, multiplied by the applicable VAT rate. The importer’s customs broker or adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to the instrument.

Prepare the UK export declaration
For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI number and classify each instrument under the correct UK commodity code. The online export declaration needs the value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing list references. Give the carrier the invoice and any required export licences or certificates. Keep model descriptions consistent across the declaration and the information used to assess electronic keyboard certification.
Check the limited cross-border retail option
The cross-border e-commerce retail import list includes 92079000, other instruments whose sound is produced or amplified electrically. That entry does not cover the whole range. Listed goods imported through bonded 1210 or direct 9610 channels are supervised as personal-use articles, without first-import licence, registration or filing requirements, except for suspended epidemic-area goods or emergency risk handling.
The limits are RMB 5,000 per transaction and RMB 26,000 per person annually. Consumers must accept a risk notice, and goods are for personal use and may not be resold. The overseas business carries product quality and safety responsibility and must appoint a mainland-registered company to register with customs, declare truthfully and share civil liability. Assess this route separately from supplying a distributor’s stock.

Find and check the Chinese importer
Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached your brand, our staff in China check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.
We prepare registration and label work with licensed partners in China. The importer of record and, where required, the cross-border e-commerce agent remain licensed partners’ regulated roles in China; your brand’s own filings remain yours. We check the proposed arrangements with those partners.
For the piano range, establish who will confirm classification, resolve any electronic keyboard CCC requirement and review landed cost before agreeing the shipment. Use our export-to-China service to arrange the importer checks alongside that preparation.
