How to export Metrology instruments from the UK to China
Export metrology instruments by checking the model's UK control status and Chinese tariff line before quoting. MFN duty ranges from 0% to 8% across the listed lines; import VAT also shapes landed cost. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands.

Start with the model, its classification and the buyer's use
For metrology and dimensional measuring instruments, settle the model's classification and UK export-control status before quoting a Chinese buyer. Technical specifications determine whether an instrument is controlled. The market figures below describe UK exports under HS 9017-9031 (11 subheadings), which cover a wider range of goods than an individual maker's products.
HMRC recorded £112.7m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 11 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £95.9m, +17.5%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £157.1m. January to July 2026: £53.5m against £69.3m in the same months of 2025 (-22.8%). These figures cover UK exports under HS 9017-9031 (11 subheadings).
The largest UK export line to China was 90318080, covering non-optical measuring or checking instruments, at £73.7m in 2025. Treat that as the whole tariff-line value, rather than demand for your particular instrument. Give the prospective importer the model specification and intended application so its customs broker can establish the Chinese classification and applicable import requirements. For material-testing equipment, see exporting material testers to China.
Use the Chinese tariff line to build the landed price
The verified MFN rates are listed below. These duties and import VAT affect landed cost and the price your importer can offer. The standard import VAT rate is 13%, subject to statutory exceptions; its base is customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax. The importer's customs broker or adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to these instruments. Agree the Chinese tariff line before treating a quotation as a landed price.

Check UK controls before arranging the export
The UK dual-use control list includes materials processing in category 2. Assess your instrument against the UK Strategic Export Control Lists using its technical specification before quoting; its customs code alone does not settle the control question. Establish whether an export licence is required before committing to shipment.
For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI and the correct commodity code. The online export declaration needs value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing-list references. Give the carrier the invoice and any required export licences or certificates. Keep the model description consistent with the classification and control assessment.
Retail e-commerce covers only part of this range
The cross-border e-commerce retail import list includes Chinese line 90173000 for micrometers, callipers and gauges. Do not extend that entry to the other instrument lines. Listed goods entering through bonded 1210 or direct 9610 are supervised as personal-use articles, with first-import licence, registration and filing requirements disapplied, except for suspended epidemic-area goods or emergency risk handling.
This route is for personal use and the goods may not be resold. The limits are RMB 5,000 per transaction and RMB 26,000 annually per person. The overseas business remains responsible for product quality and safety and must appoint a mainland-registered company for customs registration, truthful declarations and shared civil liability. Assess that arrangement before offering a listed gauge through retail e-commerce.

Check the Chinese importer before committing stock
Check whether the prospective importer understands your instrument's application, can resolve its Chinese tariff line and has a plan for customs clearance and support. Ask it to have its customs broker settle the model's import requirements before you agree the shipment. For a retail e-commerce proposal, establish who will fulfil the mainland-company obligations.
Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached you, our staff in China check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.
Where registration or label work is needed, we prepare it with licensed partners in China. The importer of record and any required cross-border e-commerce agent remain licensed-partner roles in China; your own filings remain yours. Use our export-to-China service to discuss checking the buyer and preparing the work.
Frequently asked questions
Do metrology instruments need a UK export licence?
That depends on the model's technical specification. Assess it against the UK Strategic Export Control Lists, including category 2 materials processing, before quoting or committing to shipment.
What is China's duty on micrometers and callipers?
Chinese tariff line 90173000 has an MFN rate of 8%. Import VAT also affects landed cost. Have the importer settle the model's classification before pricing the shipment.
Can I sell measuring instruments through retail e-commerce?
The list includes 90173000 for micrometers, callipers and gauges. It does not cover this whole range. Listed retail imports are for personal use and may not be resold.
Can you check an importer that has contacted my instrument business?
Yes. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China check a Chinese importer that has approached a UK brand before stock is sent or anything is signed.
