Match the camera to its Chinese import route

For cameras and video equipment, establish the exact model’s Chinese tariff line and applicable product requirements before agreeing shipment. The CCC commodity-code reference table has no matching row starting with these HS6 codes, but catalogue descriptions can still cover a product. The largest UK export line is 85258900, television cameras, digital cameras and video camera recorders excluding the specified specialist types, at £11.8m; this is the HS-code total, not sales of your model.

For UK exports under HS 8525-9007 (11 subheadings): HMRC recorded £17.8m of UK goods exports to mainland China under 11 HS6 subheadings in 2025 (2024: £20.4m, -12.4%). Exports to Hong Kong under the same codes were £9.1m.

UK exports under HS 8525-9007 (11 subheadings), January to July 2026: £9.1m against £10.4m in the same months of 2025 (-12.4%). Use these totals as market context when discussing a model-specific order with an importer.

Build duty and VAT into the importer’s price

The listed Chinese tariff lines distinguish digital cameras and transmission apparatus from specialist cameras, cinematographic equipment and parts. The table gives the listed MFN rates. Line 90079100 also has a provisional 2026 rate of 5%. Have the importer’s customs broker confirm the applicable line and rate before you negotiate the supply price.

The VAT Law sets the general import VAT rate at 13%, subject to its exceptions. Import VAT uses the customs value plus customs duty plus consumption tax as its base. The importer’s adviser confirms whether consumption tax applies to the camera. These border taxes add to landed cost and shape the price the importer can offer.

Prepare the UK camera export declaration

For exports from England, Scotland or Wales, obtain a GB EORI and classify the camera under the right UK commodity code. Arrange the online export declaration with its value, weight, packaging, destination, transport and invoice and packing list references. Give the carrier the invoice and any applicable export licences or certificates; establish which apply to the particular equipment before shipment.

Use cross-border retail only for listed models

The cross-border retail list covers only part of this range: 85258922 non-special-purpose digital SLR cameras, 85258929 other non-special-purpose digital cameras, 85258933 non-special-purpose household video camera recorders and 85258939 other non-special-purpose video camera recorders. Listed goods through bonded 1210 or direct 9610 channels receive personal-use supervision, without first-import licence, registration or filing requirements, subject to the stated epidemic-area and emergency-risk exceptions.

The overseas business remains responsible for quality and safety and must appoint a mainland-registered company to register with customs, declare truthfully and share civil liability. Before ordering, consumers must accept the risk notice, including possible differences from Chinese standards, possible absence of Chinese labels with online Chinese e-label access, and the personal-use restriction against resale. The limits are RMB 5,000 per transaction and RMB 26,000 annually per person.

Check the Chinese buyer before committing stock

Check whether the prospective buyer intends to distribute the cameras or operate an eligible cross-border retail route; the latter’s personal-use purchases cannot be resold. Our own staff in China find and check Chinese importers and distributors for UK brands. If an importer has already approached you, our staff in China check that company before stock is sent or anything is signed.

We prepare registration and label work with licensed partners in China. Regulated roles, including the importer of record and any required cross-border e-commerce agent, stay with licensed partners in China; the brand’s own filings stay the brand’s. We check requirements with those partners. Use our export-to-China service to arrange buyer checks and preparation for the proposed camera shipment.
