Where to recycle batteries and electricals
Use a participating battery collection point for intact portable batteries, or ask your council about electrical recycling and household collections. Confirm acceptance before travelling, especially for damaged lithium batteries, and keep business waste separate. This guide is from Cambridge China Bridge.

Separate household items from business waste
Start by identifying where the waste came from. An unwanted personal purchase belongs on the household route. Waste from commercial activity is business waste, including waste from a business run at home. Describe company samples, unsold stock and customer returns honestly when asking for disposal.
This guide adds disposal steps to our China battery sourcing guide. Keep the product label, battery details and any removal instructions available when contacting a collection service.
Choose the route for an intact item
For intact portable batteries, ask a participating supermarket or battery collection point about acceptance. This gives you a route to investigate even when the Chinese seller has no UK shop. Cover accessible lithium battery terminals with insulating tape before collection, without opening the battery pack.
For an electrical item, use your local household waste recycling centre after checking acceptance. If the battery cannot be removed safely, recycle the whole device as an electrical item. Do not put batteries or battery-powered devices in general rubbish or mixed recycling.
Check council acceptance before setting off
Tell the council the product type, battery chemistry if known, whether the battery is removable, its condition and whether it is household or business waste. Ask which site accepts that exact item, whether booking or proof of residence is needed, and whether there are vehicle or access restrictions.
Ask whether your address has a separate battery or small-electrical collection service, and how to present items. Follow the council’s instructions rather than putting them inside a recycling bin. For a large appliance, ask about a bulky collection and confirm that the appliance is accepted.
Arrange damaged lithium batteries separately
Stop using or charging a swollen, leaking or damaged lithium battery. Contact the council waste team before moving it. Describe the damage clearly and ask for an approved handover point or specialist collection, together with temporary storage, packaging and transport instructions. Do not assume an ordinary battery drop box accepts damaged packs.
If the battery or device is smoking, raise the alarm, get out, stay out and call 999 immediately. Do not attempt a trip to the recycling centre during an active incident.
Keep disposal arrangements separate from your damaged battery refund claim. Ask the recipient specifically how to handle the damaged item before agreeing to post or courier it.

If the council cannot accept the item
Ask the waste team to identify an alternative service for the exact battery or device. If you use a private collector, check its waste-carrier registration through the relevant register for your UK nation. Confirm that it accepts the item’s chemistry and condition; registration alone does not answer that question.
For business stock or returns, arrange a business waste route rather than assuming household acceptance. Our guide to disposing of unsellable imported returns in England covers that separate process. Keep the acceptance confirmation and collection receipt with your product records.
Frequently asked questions
Where can I recycle a battery bought in China?
For an intact portable battery, ask a participating supermarket collection point or your council. Give them the battery type and condition. Use a separately agreed route for a damaged lithium battery.
Can I recycle a device with a built-in battery?
Yes, use an electrical recycling route if the battery cannot be removed safely. Check council acceptance first, and report any battery damage before taking the device there.
Can I put a swollen battery in a supermarket bin?
Do not use an ordinary drop box without explicit acceptance of the damaged battery. Stop using or charging it and ask the council waste team for handling instructions and a suitable disposal route.
Can I take business returns to a household tip?
Do not assume acceptance. Waste from commercial activity is business waste, even when the product looks like a household item. Declare its business origin and arrange an accepted business waste route.
