How to check factory packing before loading
Ask for identified cartons from actual packed production to be opened before loading. Compare their contents, internal protection and pack quantities with the approved packing specification, record differences and require correction evidence before release. You can arrange this check with Cambridge China Bridge.

Give the checker an approved packing reference
Send the approved packing specification, photographs or retained packing sample, together with the order and product references. Identify the approved revision and describe the carton, inner packs, inserts, bags, separators, accessories and closure method. State the contents expected in each pack, including any mixed colours or variants.
Agree who selects cartons, which packing variations need checking, who can authorise changes and when the report must arrive. Schedule the check while cartons can still be opened and repacked. Use the container loading guide for the later container, stowage and seal checks.
Request evidence from packed production
Ask for photographs showing the packed stock and identifiable carton markings, followed by an opening sequence from selected production cartons. Keep the carton reference visible or connected to the image record. Request views of the contents before anything is removed, the packing layers during removal and the empty carton with its inserts.
Ask the checker to select cartons across the relevant products, packing runs and stock locations rather than accept only factory-prepared demonstration packs. Record who selected and opened them, the date, the batch references and the scope checked. If relying on remote evidence, state which observations came from factory photographs and which were witnessed.
Check protection and quantities inside
Compare the actual inserts, cushioning, separators, edge protection and bags with the approved reference. Check that parts stay in their intended positions, vulnerable surfaces are separated and accessories cannot strike the product. Photograph missing protection, gaps, compression and contact points. Appearance alone may not confirm material grade or thickness, so request supporting material records or measurements where specified.
Count the contents of opened cartons, including inner packs, sale units and accessories. Check variant combinations against the order and carton label, then reconcile carton totals with the packing list. Record the quantities actually checked separately from the shipment totals. Matching carton weight can support a check but cannot establish that the contents or quantities are correct.
Record differences before cartons leave
For each discrepancy, record the carton and batch reference, expected packing, observed packing, photographs and proposed correction. Identify affected stock and ask the factory to separate it pending a decision. Missing inserts, substituted materials and incorrect pack quantities should remain separate findings so the correction addresses each problem.
Request evidence of corrected cartons being reopened, checked and resealed, with their references retained. Record who authorised release and any limitations or unresolved findings. A corrected demonstration pack does not establish that affected stock was repacked. If packing changes after inspection, use the repacking guide to plan the recheck.

Keep packing checks within their scope
This check establishes what was observed in selected production cartons against your approved packing reference. It does not establish transit performance or the condition of unopened stock. Use packaging tests for your distribution route to assess transport protection and product pre-shipment inspection for product quality checks.
For UK consumer products, official guidance says products should only be sold once compliance with product safety regulations has been demonstrated appropriately. Treat packing photographs as evidence of the observed packing, and retain separate evidence for product safety compliance.
Frequently asked questions
Are factory packing photos enough?
Only if they show identifiable packed production and the relevant packing details. A sample pack or photographs of closed cartons cannot show the internal protection or confirm the contents.
Who should choose cartons for a packing check?
Ask the checker to select cartons from the actual shipment across relevant packing variations and stock locations. Record the selection scope and any restrictions on access.
Can carton weight prove the pack quantity?
Weight can flag a difference, but matching weight cannot confirm the contents. Count opened cartons and compare the units, variants and accessories with the approved packing reference.
What if the factory used different packing?
Record the difference, identify affected stock and hold its release pending your decision. Require correction evidence and a recheck, or record your explicit approval of the change before loading.
