Will building control accept windows from China?
Acceptance is possible, but do not order on a supplier’s promise of UK compliance. Agree the jurisdiction, exact product evidence, installation details and approval or installer-certification route before manufacture. CE marking alone does not establish suitability for the work. Coordinate the factory evidence with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm where the home is and what work is planned
Start with the property address and describe whether you are replacing existing units, changing openings, building an extension or constructing a home. Government guidance says to check whether approval is needed before construction or alterations. The detailed buying checklist below assumes an ordinary home project in England.
For Wales, ask the local building control body to identify the applicable guidance and route. Scotland and Northern Ireland have different rules, so obtain local advice before using an English specification. Send photographs, opening drawings and the project description, and ask which requirements and document editions apply.
Agree who will approve or certify the installation
In England, a scheme-registered installer can self-certify work within their scheme’s scope. Before ordering, ask the installer to confirm in writing that they will install and certify your owner-supplied units, after reviewing the proposed evidence. Ask whether their registration covers the whole job, including any alterations to openings.
If you do not use a relevant scheme-registered installer, government home-improvement guidance describes a building notice or full plans application with building control inspection. Ask building control which route suits your project and what it needs before work starts. For extensions, new homes or structural changes, ask how the windows and doors fit into the wider application. For self-build projects, see warranty acceptance of Chinese materials.
Submit evidence for the complete ordered unit
England’s materials guidance states that the CE symbol alone does not necessarily show suitability for the building work. Our construction materials guide covers marking and declarations. For this project, submit the declaration of performance, supporting reports, drawings and proposed installation details together, and ask the reviewer to identify missing evidence before manufacture.
Ask your designer and reviewer to confirm the evidence needed for whole-unit thermal performance, ventilation, safety glazing, escape openings, weather resistance, security and accessible thresholds where relevant. A glazing report may describe only the glass. Use our double-glazed units guide for that component, then check the complete frame, glass, hardware and opening arrangement.
Make manufacture conditional on resolving evidence gaps
Create an opening schedule linking each location to its dimensions, opening direction, frame system, glazing build-up, vents, locks, seals and threshold. Match reports to that schedule using our test-report coverage guide. Ask who measured the openings and who accepts responsibility for the manufacturing dimensions.
Obtain written comments from the installer or building control reviewer and close unresolved questions before releasing manufacture. Record the agreed specification and evidence revisions in the order. Require proposed substitutions to return for review, and agree who pays for additional testing, redesign or replacement if the supplied configuration differs.

Agree the completion file before paying the deposit
A scheme-registered installer should notify the local authority and provide a compliance certificate, directly or through the scheme operator. For the building control route, agree who arranges inspections and obtains the applicable completion record. Government guidance says a full plans application usually leads to a completion certificate if the finished work complies.
Agree a handover file containing the final opening schedule, declarations, supporting evidence, delivery identifiers, installation photographs, inspection correspondence and the relevant certificate. Ask the installer which details need photographing before they are concealed. Keep factory documents and installation records together, and check that the completion record identifies the correct property and work.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use CE-marked Chinese windows in my home?
CE marking alone does not establish suitability for the building work. Send the exact unit’s declared performance and installation details to your installer or building control reviewer before manufacture.
Will an installer certify windows I bought myself?
Ask before ordering. Get written confirmation that the installer will accept your units and evidence and can certify the proposed work within their scheme’s scope.
Can I install imported windows myself?
For an ordinary home project in England, discuss the building control application and inspections before starting. Do not assume a factory certificate replaces the installation approval route.
What paperwork should I keep after installation?
Keep the applicable completion or installer compliance certificate with the final specification, declarations, reports, delivery records, installation photographs and inspection correspondence.
