China return refused: how do I get a refund?
Match the return label to the seller’s written approval, obtain the carrier’s reason for failed delivery and preserve the parcel and tracking records. Send a refund complaint with that evidence, then ask your payment provider about the available dispute route. For factory sourcing support, contact Cambridge China Bridge.

Prove that you used the authorised address
This guide concerns a personal purchase whose return has already failed. Export the seller’s return approval from the original order channel, keeping the sender, date and order reference visible. Compare the approved recipient, address, postcode and telephone number with the actual booking and parcel label. For preparation before dispatch, use our personal return guide.
If the seller now gives a different address, preserve both instructions and ask it to explain the change. State which instruction you followed and when. If you used the address on the original packaging without approval, disclose that gap and ask the seller to confirm whether the recipient was authorised to accept your return.
Get the carrier’s explanation in writing
Ask the carrier to explain the exact tracking event rather than relying on a translated status. Request the attempted delivery address, date, local delivery reference and available recipient contact records. Ask whether the parcel was refused by the recipient, unclaimed, held for clearance, affected by an address problem or rejected because of its contents. Request supporting records and a case reference.
Ask who was contacted about paperwork or charges and what response was recorded. Send the explanation to the seller and request its account of events. Where the carrier cannot establish the reason, describe delivery as unresolved rather than accusing the seller of refusal. Pursue any carrier service complaint separately from the purchase refund.
Preserve the returned parcel and a clear timeline
Download the complete tracking history while it remains available. Combine it with the posting receipt, approved address, label, declaration, packing photographs and refund correspondence. Create a dated timeline from return approval through attempted delivery to return to sender. Identify what each record proves and where evidence is missing.
If the parcel comes back, photograph every side, return label, carrier annotation and any damage before opening it. Record the contents and condition if opening is necessary, and retain the packaging. Keep the goods available while seeking written instructions. Before paying to resend, obtain a confirmed recipient, a workable delivery arrangement and agreement about the extra postage.
Send the UK seller a focused refund complaint
Identify the contracting seller from the order confirmation and invoice, rather than treating the China return warehouse as the seller. Send the UK seller the timeline and supporting records. Explain whether you cancelled an unwanted purchase, reported a fault or relied on its agreed returns policy. State the refund requested and ask for a written response addressing the failed return.
For a valid cancellation covered by UK cancellation rules, where the seller has not offered to collect, reimbursement is due without undue delay and no later than 14 days after receipt of the goods or, if earlier, your supply of evidence that you sent them back. Submit that evidence rather than accepting receipt as the only possible trigger. Ask a consumer adviser how the failed delivery affects your particular claim.
Check eligibility using our personal order cancellation guide; do not assume that every return follows the cancellation route. If the seller disputes your claim, request its reasons and use the consumer advice helpline for your UK nation listed in government guidance. Keep the advice and the seller’s response with the evidence file.

Ask the payment provider to assess the dispute
Tell the marketplace or payment provider promptly that the original purchase arrived but the authorised return failed and the refund remains disputed. Submit the same evidence file. For a card payment, ask the issuer whether chargeback or a credit-card claim applies. For another payment method, ask what dispute process is available. Request the applicable deadlines and return-evidence requirements in writing; do not assume a refund is guaranteed.
If you dispute the financial provider’s handling, follow its complaints procedure and request a written response. Government guidance says you can usually take the complaint to the Financial Ombudsman Service if unhappy with that response. Check the provider’s procedure for the appropriate service and referral conditions. Our payment-provider complaint guide covers the escalation file. Update all open cases if a refund arrives.
Frequently asked questions
Does refused return tracking guarantee a refund?
Do not treat the status alone as decisive. Combine it with the approved address, posting evidence and carrier explanation, then ask the seller or payment provider to assess the applicable refund route.
What if the seller says I used the wrong address?
Send its dated address approval alongside the booking and label. Highlight any differences honestly and ask it to explain any later address change.
Should I resend a return that comes back from China?
Preserve the parcel and return records first. Obtain a confirmed recipient, a workable delivery arrangement and written agreement about extra postage before paying to resend.
What should I send my bank for a failed return?
Send the order and payment records, return approval, label, posting receipt, full tracking, carrier explanation and seller correspondence. Explain that the purchase arrived but the return failed.
