Getting started

Buying pond pumps and aquarium heaters from China

Before ordering, check the exact model's permitted use near water, cable and connector suitability, electrical protection, isolation arrangements and heater failure controls. Have an electrician review the proposed setup before approving the specification. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate factory questions through its own staff in China.

Define where the equipment will work

Tell the factory whether the pump or heater will be submerged, exposed to splashes or installed outdoors. Specify fresh or salt water, water temperature, immersion conditions, operating duty and cleaning methods. Ask which parts may enter the water and which must remain dry, including controllers, power supplies and cable joints.

Request the exact model's manual, drawings and supporting test reports. Match them to the sample and proposed production components. Use our electrical import rules guide for the wider compliance checks. This guide adds the checks needed to assess the proposed installation near water.

Review protection across the whole setup

HSE advises using a residual current device, particularly in wet or damp locations. It detects some faults, but cannot cover every electrical fault. Ask the electrician to select the protection for the proposed equipment and supply, including earthing where applicable, rather than assuming a factory-supplied protective plug makes the installation safe.

Map the socket, power supply, controller and connections against splashes, rain and possible flooding. Ask what happens if protection trips and stops pumping or heating. Agree how staff will detect that loss and respond without bypassing protection. For enclosure evidence, see checking waterproof claims.

Specify cables and connectors before ordering

Request the cable specification and evidence for the actual exposure: continuous immersion, sunlight, cold, abrasion or salt water as relevant. Agree enough factory-fitted cable to reach the planned connection point. Ask whether the cable is replaceable and whether cutting it or adding a joint changes the manufacturer's permitted installation.

Check each connector's intended location and assembled condition, including seals, cable glands, unused openings and strain relief. A submersible pump body does not establish that its connector can be submerged. Ask for a cable routing plan that avoids pulling, crushing and water tracking towards dry connections. Use our cord anchorage guide for production inspection.

Plan isolation and heater failure controls

HSE guidance says energy isolation should prevent inadvertent reconnection. Ask the electrician to define an accessible isolation method for all equipment affected by cleaning or maintenance, including separate supplies. Identify the devices clearly and agree how isolation will be verified. Do not treat a thermostat setting, remote control or timer as the isolation method.

For heaters, ask how normal temperature regulation differs from overtemperature protection. Request evidence of behaviour after a failed sensor, stuck heating control, falling water level and power restoration. Confirm immersion limits, mounting position, cooling instructions and restart behaviour. Have the factory or laboratory demonstrate fault responses safely; do not create electrical faults yourself.

Get the electrician's review before approving production

Send the electrician the model ratings, manuals, wiring diagrams, cable specifications, connector details, protection information and a drawing of the proposed location. Ask for written comments on supply suitability, protective arrangements, isolation, cable routing and connection placement. Resolve those comments with the factory before approving the sample or production specification.

Keep the agreed components and installation limits in the order specification. Ask the factory to obtain approval before changing cables, seals, controllers or protective devices. Arrange checks on production units against that specification, then have the installed setup checked before use. Factory product evidence and an electrician's installation review answer different questions.

Frequently asked questions

Is a waterproof pond pump safe to plug in?

Check the permitted immersion conditions and the rest of the setup. The cable joint, controller and socket may have different limits. Have an electrician review the proposed supply and protection.

Does an RCD make an aquarium heater safe?

An RCD detects some electrical faults. It does not establish cable suitability, safe isolation or heater temperature control. Review these separately before ordering.

Can I extend a pond pump cable?

Ask the manufacturer whether an extension is permitted and have the electrician specify any connection. Prefer enough factory-fitted cable to reach the planned connection point.

What heater controls should I ask the factory about?

Ask about temperature regulation, separate overtemperature protection, sensor failure, low water level and restart after a power cut. Request test evidence for the exact model.
