How to check an Alibaba furniture seller
Before paying for furniture for your home, match the seller’s company details to the order and payment recipient. Ask for evidence of the exact furniture, check UK suitability and delivery costs, and get the return address and collection terms in writing. Cambridge China Bridge can check the seller through its own staff in China.

Connect the seller to the payment
Ask for the company’s registered name, business licence and address. Compare these with the company named on your order. A shop name or platform badge alone is not enough. Ask whether the seller makes the furniture or buys it from another factory. Use our supplier verification guide for the detailed company checks.
For a direct bank transfer, compare the account holder with the company you checked. Pause if it names a person or an unexplained company. For platform payment, check that the payment belongs to your saved order through your own account. Confirm changed payment details using a contact you already know. Our scams guide explains payment redirection.
Ask to see the furniture you will receive
Ask for a live video showing the exact model, including its underside, joints, drawer movement and upholstery seams. Have the seller measure it during the call. Catalogue pictures cannot show what will arrive. For furniture made to order, request fabric or finish samples and agree to review the completed item before shipment.
Put the model, dimensions, materials, colour, included fittings and packaging into the order. Ask whether photographs show genuine branded goods, the seller’s own brand or unbranded furniture. Avoid replica offers. Save the listing and approved evidence. Our guide to using Alibaba safely explains how clear order terms support platform protection.
Check suitability for your UK home
For a sofa or upholstered chair, ask for UK fire-safety evidence covering the model and its fabric and filling combination, plus photographs of the attached labels. Check that the report identifies those materials; ask the issuing laboratory to confirm it if unclear. Also request assembly instructions and details of any wall fixings. Pause if the seller supplies only a generic certificate.
Measure your doorway, stairs and intended room against the packed and assembled dimensions. Get a written total covering packing, transport, clearance, delivery and assembly where offered. The courier will tell you if VAT or duty needs paying. Ask who pays these charges and whether delivery means the kerb or your room. Identify your destination as Great Britain or Northern Ireland.
Get a usable return arrangement
Before paying, ask for the full return address and contact name. Establish whether returns go to the UK or China; a UK delivery warehouse does not tell you where returns go. Ask what happens if the furniture arrives damaged, differs from the order or is simply unwanted, including any agreed restrictions for custom work.
Ask who arranges collection, who pays transport, what packaging you must keep and how a refund or replacement is agreed. Request a return transport quote using the packed size and your address. A promise to accept returns is of little practical use if sending the furniture back is unaffordable.
Make the final check before paying
Keep the seller’s identity, payment details, approved product evidence, delivery total and return terms together. Ask the seller to confirm unresolved points in the order. Pause if names conflict, product evidence is missing or the return address remains vague. For made-to-order furniture, agree when you will see inspection evidence and what must pass before the balance is paid.
Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China and can discuss factory verification. If you prefer to explore buying through a UK company, ask who will be named as your seller and which delivery and return terms will apply before agreeing.
Frequently asked questions
Is an Alibaba seller badge enough for buying a sofa?
No. Check the company behind the shop, the payment recipient, evidence for the exact sofa, UK suitability and written delivery and return arrangements.
Should I pay an Alibaba seller’s personal bank account?
Pause. Ask why the recipient differs from the company on your order and verify the explanation independently before sending money.
What evidence should I ask for before buying furniture?
Request a live video of the model, measured dimensions, material details and relevant safety reports. For custom furniture, agree to check the finished item before shipment.
Does a UK warehouse mean I can return furniture in the UK?
Do not assume so. Get the actual return address in writing, plus who arranges collection, who pays transport and how a refund or replacement will be handled.
