Card money reserved after a failed China order?

Your card may show a pending authorisation that reserves funds without a completed payment. Cancelling the order does not prove the hold has been released. Ask the seller for processor evidence and your issuer for the transaction status before retrying. Supplier follow-up can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Separate reserved money from a completed payment

A pending authorisation reserves spending capacity while the payment awaits completion. A completed payment is money actually taken. A reduced available balance alone does not establish which happened. GOV.UK Pay documentation illustrates the distinction: an authorised payment can reduce the available balance before the processor takes the money.

Check the card account's pending entries and completed transactions separately. Save the checkout failure message, cancellation confirmation and any payment receipt. Ask the issuer to classify the entry if its wording is unclear. Our supplier payment guide covers payment routes; this guide covers an unresolved card attempt.

Ask the seller to check the payment processor

Contact the seller promptly after a failed checkout or cancellation. Ask its payment team to confirm whether the attempt was authorised only, captured for payment, cancelled through the processor or remains unresolved. An order marked cancelled is evidence about the order, but does not establish the card transaction's status.

Request processor evidence showing the amount, currency, attempt date and time, payment reference and current status. If only authorised, ask whether the processor can cancel or reverse that authorisation, and request confirmation of the action and its reference. If a marketplace collected payment, contact its payment support team too.

Give the issuer evidence it can match

Prepare the merchant description shown on your card account, amount, currency, attempt date and time, order reference and masked card details. Include the seller's processor confirmation and cancellation reference, if available. Keep a record of each attempt so the issuer can distinguish separate holds from a completed payment.

Ask the issuer whether the entry is still an authorisation, has completed or has been reversed. Ask when it expects the hold to release, what evidence could help and when to contact it again. Do not send complete card details or security codes to the seller.

Know when to contact the issuer

Contact the issuer promptly if the seller cannot establish the status, the evidence conflicts, or the reserved amount prevents an essential business payment. Contact it again if the hold remains beyond the release point it gave you. Report an unfamiliar or unauthorised attempt immediately through the issuer's verified channel.

If the issuer confirms a completed payment, ask the seller to explain the charge and confirm the proposed refund. Follow our missing card refund guide for tracing an agreed refund. Ask the issuer what dispute options and deadlines apply to your business card while the investigation continues.

Resolve the original attempt before retrying

Repeated attempts can create further reservations or payments. Before retrying, obtain a clear status for the original attempt and written confirmation of which order the seller will fulfil. Ask it to stop further collection against the cancelled attempt. If the status remains unresolved, pause and ask the issuer about the risk of another payment.

Match the eventual account outcome to the seller's evidence before closing the case. If duplicate payments completed, use our duplicate supplier payment guide. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can help obtain supplier evidence; your card issuer confirms what happened on your account.

Frequently asked questions

Why is money reserved after my China order failed?

The card attempt may have been authorised before checkout failed. Ask the seller for the processor status and your issuer whether the entry is a hold or a completed payment.

Does cancelling an order release the card hold?

Do not assume it does. Ask for evidence that the payment authorisation was cancelled or reversed, then ask the issuer whether it has released the reservation.

How long should I wait for reserved money to return?

Ask your issuer for the expected release point for this transaction and a follow-up date. Contact it again if the hold remains beyond that point; contact it sooner if the reservation causes an urgent problem.

Should I pay again if checkout says payment failed?

Pause until the seller checks the original attempt with its processor. If the status is unclear, contact the issuer before retrying and ask the seller to prevent further collection against the cancelled attempt.
