Start with the importer's customs registration

MRA states: “If you are a first time importer, you will be required to register yourself at MRA, Customs.” For a buyer placing a factory order, the practical starting point is to establish whose name will appear as importer and ask your Mauritius customs broker to check that registration before you commit.

Send the broker the product description, intended use, materials, model and photographs. Ask them to identify any applicable permits, product approvals, testing or labelling requirements before sampling and packaging are agreed. Use the overseas buying guide for the wider sourcing process.

Agree the price to your own port

We are a UK-based sourcing company with our own staff in China. We can quote goods from Chinese factories to your nominated port in Mauritius. Give us the delivery port, specification, quantity and packaging needs, and ask the quote to identify the delivery term, freight, insurance arrangements and exclusions.

Ask your broker to estimate destination handling, clearance, duties, taxes and onward delivery separately, then compare the combined cost. Your own customs broker confirms the final entry. Our buying through a UK company service explains the purchasing arrangement.

Prepare the documents while production is running

We agree the document pack with you and your broker before shipment. The factory supplies product descriptions, packing details and available test reports. We coordinate the commercial invoice and packing list, checking that the seller, buyer, goods, quantities, weights and carton marks match the agreed shipment.

Where your broker requests a certificate of origin, we arrange the appropriate document and send a draft for checking. We collect test reports from the factory or arrange agreed testing, checking that the model, materials and manufacturer match the order. Send the broker drafts alongside the carrier's transport document before dispatch.

Check the supplier and inspect the shipment

Our China staff check the supplier's identity, factory location, production capability and proposed payment recipient. We establish who will manufacture the goods and what work is subcontracted. Agree a written specification and retain an approved sample so the inspection has a clear reference.

Before shipment, we inspect against the agreed specification: workmanship, dimensions, function, quantities, packaging and the label artwork approved by you and your broker. We report defects and check agreed corrections before release. For separate destination planning, see the South Africa guide and Kenya guide.

Give your Mauritius broker a complete arrival file

MRA's commercial-importer guidance requires a Customs Declaration, also called a Bill of Entry, for every importation. Ask your appointed broker to handle the declaration, check classification and valuation, submit the supporting documents and coordinate any clearance queries.

Before arrival, give the broker the final commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, freight and insurance details, and any agreed certificates or test reports. Ask them to confirm the applicable charges, payment arrangements and release process. Keep the inspection report and approved specification with your purchasing records.
