Importing from China to Chile: Duties, Rules and Steps

Before importing from China to Chile, confirm classification, customs valuation, duty and VAT treatment, and product approvals. China–Chile FTA preferences depend on the applicable tariff schedule, origin rules and evidence; buying from a Chinese supplier alone does not establish eligibility.

Start with the product, destination and intended use

This guide covers buyers importing into Chile, including individuals and businesses. Purchasing recommendations are distinguished from official requirements; confirm the rules applicable to your shipment before committing money.

Prepare the product description, materials, intended use, model, quantity, purchase value and delivery address. Ask a Chilean customs agent to confirm classification, customs treatment and required approvals before you approve production.

Check documents against Chilean requirements. Do not accept a document prepared for another market as evidence of Chilean compliance without confirming its relevance.

Customs, ad valorem duty and VAT: understand the calculation

Chile’s customs authority is Servicio Nacional de Aduanas. Ask your agent or carrier which declaration and clearance procedure apply to your shipment.

CorreosChile’s ordinary calculation uses customs value, described as CIF, and adds customs duty to the import VAT base. Confirm valuation adjustments, exemptions and additional taxes for your goods. Qualifying remote consumer purchases have a separate treatment described below.

Have your agent record the applicable tariff treatment and tax rates against the confirmed classification and origin. A general headline percentage is not a complete landed-cost calculation.

Customs valueStart with the goods value, international freight and insurance; confirm the accepted customs valuation.Commercial invoice, freight quotation and insurance information.

China–Chile FTA: Chinese origin needs evidence

SUBREI lists the China–Chile Free Trade Agreement as in force and identifies certification by an entity as its origin-certification regime. Its agreement materials include origin rules, product-specific rules and tariff schedules.

Before budgeting for a preference, have your agent check the applicable origin rule and Chile’s tariff schedule. Ask the supplier to arrange the required origin evidence and provide a draft for review before shipment.

A Chinese invoice or dispatch from a Chinese port does not by itself establish preferential origin. Check the origin evidence and the conditions applicable to the actual transport route. Confirm VAT treatment separately.

Importer formalities: distinguish a business from a personal purchase

SII’s business-formalisation guidance covers obtaining a RUT tax identifier and declaring commencement of activities. Its import FAQ directs buyers to a customs agent for the import procedure. For a business purchase, confirm the importer’s identity, tax status and declaration arrangements before dispatch.

For a personal purchase, ask the carrier which identification, purchase evidence and clearance procedure apply. Do not assume that business-registration instructions apply unchanged to a personal parcel.

SII describes VAT collection at purchase for qualifying remote consumer purchases of goods worth up to US$500 through registered overseas sellers or platforms. Where the conditions are met and VAT was collected, import VAT and customs-duty exemptions apply. Keep payment evidence and confirm eligibility. Goods requiring special authorisations or subject to specific taxes follow the traditional import process.

Product approval: check SEC and consumer-safety requirements

SEC states that products regulated by it must be certified and carry the SEC certification mark before commercialisation in Chile, with an energy-efficiency label where applicable. Its mandatory-product search identifies relevant protocols, laboratories and certification bodies.

Give an authorised certification body the exact model and technical information before ordering. Ask which testing, samples, certification system and marking apply, and have it assess the supplier’s test reports against those requirements.

SERNAC’s toy guidance identifies Spanish-language packaging labels, recommended age and instructions for safe use. Check the requirements for your actual product category rather than applying a toy checklist to every purchase.

As a purchasing control, include the required compliance evidence and approved label artwork in the specification. Arrange certification and shipment inspection separately.

Ports and routes from China: compare the complete journey

Puerto San Antonio describes itself as Chile’s principal port. Maersk provides an Asia Pacific–Latin America route overview, and Hapag-Lloyd provides a service finder. Confirm the ports and connections available for your shipment directly with the carrier or forwarder.

Ask for quotations via San Antonio and Valparaíso where available, then compare the complete journey to your delivery address. Request the loading port, discharge port, intermediate calls, any transshipment and final inland leg.

Obtain a dated quotation and sailing schedule. Confirm whether the quoted transit time covers the sea leg alone or also collection, clearance and delivery, and ask which charges are excluded.

Pay Chinese suppliers against agreed evidence

Recommended purchasing controls: identify the contracting supplier, check its relationship to the bank beneficiary, and independently confirm changed bank instructions through an established contact.

Approve an identified sample and written specification before production. Negotiate payment stages against reviewable evidence, such as sample approval, agreed inspection results and shipping documents. Document how defects, rework and disputed acceptance will be handled.

For a small purchase, read any payment-protection conditions before paying. Check whether they cover your specification, payment route and potential claim.

For a larger order, discuss documentary credit with your bank. ICC Academy describes a documentary credit as a bank undertaking to honour a complying presentation of documents. Have the bank help define the required documents, alongside your supplier checks and product inspection.

A practical sequence, and mistakes to avoid

Define the purchase: record who is importing, the destination, intended use, specification and acceptable delivered cost. Avoid seeking quotations from a photograph alone.

Check entry requirements: obtain classification, tax treatment, origin requirements and the product-approval plan. Avoid paying a production deposit while a critical approval remains unresolved.

Check the supplier and sample: verify the contracting business, approve a traceable sample and agree acceptance criteria. Avoid treating a sample photograph as proof of production quality.

Agree the order: document payment stages, inspection scope, packaging, transport responsibilities and remedies. Avoid accepting a delivered-price promise without identifying the importer and clearance responsibilities.

Inspect and prepare shipment: review results, invoice, packing details, transport documents and applicable approval or origin evidence. Avoid leaving corrections until the cargo reaches Chile.

Clear, receive and retain records: coordinate with the agent or carrier, check the delivered goods and preserve the order, payment and clearance evidence.

Other destinations: use the same questions, different rules

GOV.UK explains that, when import VAT is payable to the delivery company, its base includes the goods’ value, postage, packaging, insurance and any duty owed. This UK explanation does not establish Chile’s calculation.

For destination-specific detail, use the UK import guide, Egypt guide or Saudi Arabia guide. Check each destination separately.

How Cambridge China Bridge helps

Contact Cambridge China Bridge to discuss scope and request a quote. Prepare your product specification, quantity, intended use, Chilean delivery address and any supplier quotation. Ask which supplier checks, sample coordination, production follow-up and inspections the proposed work includes.

Use factory verification for supplier-checking needs, or small-order sourcing to discuss a smaller purchase. Agree the deliverables and who will handle Chilean customs and certification before commissioning work.

Confirm which factory checks and inspections are included in your quote, and agree any third-party charges in advance. The factory-verification service page states that overseas delivery and standalone audits are scoped separately.

Frequently asked questions

Does the China–Chile FTA make my order duty-free?

Eligibility depends on the applicable tariff schedule, origin rules and evidence. Ask your customs agent to confirm the treatment before including a preference in your budget.

Is tax calculated only on the factory price?

CorreosChile’s ordinary calculation includes freight and insurance in customs value, and customs duty in the import VAT base. Qualifying remote consumer purchases have separate treatment. Obtain a calculation for your shipment.

Do I need business registration for a personal order?

Identify whether the purchase is personal or commercial first. SII’s business-formalisation guidance and remote-consumer-purchase rules address different situations. Ask the carrier which procedure applies.

The supplier sent a test report. Is that enough for SEC?

Have an authorised certification body assess it against the applicable protocol. Products regulated by SEC require certification and the SEC mark before commercialisation, with an energy-efficiency label where applicable.

Should I ship to San Antonio or Valparaíso?

Request dated quotations for the complete journey to your address. Compare available sailings, intermediate handling, destination charges and inland delivery before choosing.

How should I handle a supplier changing its bank account?

Pause payment and confirm the instruction independently through an established contact. Check the beneficiary’s relationship to the contracting supplier and retain the confirmation.

Can an inspection replace product certification?

Plan them separately. An agreed inspection checks the order against purchasing criteria; obtain required regulatory evidence through the applicable certification or approval process.

Can Cambridge China Bridge help with a small order?

Its small-order service page accepts enquiries for small and first orders. Discuss your product, budget and destination, and agree the service scope, charges and delivery responsibilities before commissioning work.
