Buying a diving air compressor from China
Before ordering, have a UK diving compressor specialist approve the breathing-air specification, filtration, intake position and cylinder connections. Agree independent air testing, commissioning and a maintenance log before allowing fills. Cambridge China Bridge can coordinate the factory evidence with your specialist.

Give your specialist the actual filling plan
Choose a specialist experienced in breathing-air compressors and cylinder filling, who can commission and support the proposed model locally. Describe your cylinders, expected filling pattern, installation site, power supply and any storage bank. State whether you want ordinary compressed air or intend to support oxygen-enriched mixtures; ask for a separate assessment of the latter.
Before paying a deposit, obtain their written review of the exact model, manual, filtration diagram, pressure controls and spare-parts availability. Record anything the factory must change or demonstrate. Use our club equipment guide for purchase authority, venue permission and insurance, and our certification guide for product-document checks.
Agree an air-testing brief before purchase
Ask the specialist and testing provider to name the breathing-air standard and acceptance limits they will use for your intended pressure and gas. Request measured results for oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, oil and moisture, plus any contaminants suggested by the lubricant or site. Specify sampling through the installed filling outlet, with the hose and filtration used in service. Record the machine serial number, sampling conditions, method and tester.
HSE recommends testing by a competent person at least once every 3 months. Use that guidance when agreeing your hobby or club testing plan with the specialist. As a purchasing safeguard, arrange additional checks after relocation, relevant repairs or a contamination concern. A factory report does not establish the air quality of your UK installation.
Review filtration and the intake together
Ask for the filter cartridge specification, approved lubricant, separator and drain instructions, and replacement criteria for the actual operating conditions. Have the specialist explain how moisture, oil and carbon monoxide risks are controlled, whether monitoring is appropriate, and what happens when a filter or monitor needs attention. HSE advises seeking the compressor or filter manufacturer's advice before modifying either system.
Walk the proposed intake route with the specialist. Look for engine exhaust, vehicle movements, ventilation outlets, solvents and other nearby contamination sources, including those present only during club activities. Check cooling airflow and how changing wind or an open doorway could affect the intake. Agree a location check whenever portable equipment is moved.
Match cylinders and the complete filling circuit
Have the specialist check cylinder working pressures, valve outlet types, filling connectors, hoses, gauges, pressure settings and protective devices as a complete circuit. Include any storage bank and manifold in the review. Do not approve an adapter simply because it screws on. Agree which cylinders operators may accept and how they check condition, markings and inspection records.
HSE advises internal inspection before filling if water may have entered a cylinder. Put that referral into the club's cylinder acceptance procedure. For buying cylinders themselves, read whether a UK dive centre will fill a China-made cylinder. Ask for explicit approval of any oxygen-enriched filling arrangement rather than assuming ordinary breathing-air equipment is suitable.

Make commissioning and records part of the order
Agree separate factory and UK acceptance checks. Before shipment, request evidence from the actual machine against the specialist's brief; our balance-payment checklist covers that payment gate. After installation, have the specialist check leaks, controls, protective devices, drains, cooling and filling operation, then review the installed air-test results. Keep the machine closed to routine fills until the agreed checks pass and operators have been trained.
Maintain a log linking the machine serial number to commissioning results, air-test reports, running hours, filter changes, lubricant changes, servicing, faults and repairs. Record dates, parts used, the person doing the work and authorisation to restart. Follow the manufacturer's maintenance schedule and agree retesting after relevant work. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can obtain factory documents and check the shipped configuration against the agreed brief.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a workshop compressor to fill diving cylinders?
Do not approve it on pressure alone. Ask a breathing-air compressor specialist to assess the complete system, filtration and intended gas, then verify installed air quality before use.
How often should diving compressor air be tested?
HSE recommends competent-person testing at least once every 3 months. Agree your hobby or club plan with the specialist, including additional checks after relevant repairs, relocation or contamination concerns.
Is the Chinese factory's air-test certificate enough?
Use it as pre-shipment evidence for the identified machine and test conditions. Arrange testing through the installed UK filling outlet before routine use, because the intake, hoses and setup may differ.
What records should a diving club keep?
Keep commissioning and air-test reports, operating hours, filter and lubricant changes, service and repair details, operator training and restart approvals. Identify the machine, dates, parts and people involved.
