Buying a basketball hoop from China: what to check
Before ordering, approve the exact hoop, mounting or ballast design and supporting structure for your site. Obtain evidence for that configuration, written limits on play and movement, and an installation acceptance checklist. Factory checks can be coordinated by Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree the model and permitted play
Specify home or club use, intended users, indoor or outdoor location, height adjustment and whether the hoop will move between sessions. Ask explicitly whether dunking, hanging on the ring and competitive play are permitted. A flexible ring does not establish that the backboard, pole, base or building can withstand those actions. Reject conflicting instructions, advertising and supplier answers.
Request drawings and safety assessment or test reports identifying the supplied ring, backboard, support, adjustment mechanism and mounting or ballast arrangement. Have a competent product safety specialist review the applicable assessment for the intended use and destination. Put these details into your written specification. Use our club equipment guide for purchase authority, venue permission and insurance.
Approve the complete mounting design
For wall or roof mounting, obtain bracket drawings, fixing positions, specified anchors, embedment, tightening instructions and loads transferred into the supporting structure. Have a structural engineer assess the actual wall, beam or roof, including its material, condition and connections. Do not approve fixings from photographs or assume that a masonry facing is a suitable structural support.
For an in-ground hoop, obtain the foundation drawing, soil assumptions, reinforcement, concrete specification, anchor arrangement, drainage and conditions for loading the completed foundation. Identify buried services before excavation. Agree who supplies and installs every component, including locally purchased anchors. Keep the engineer's site design and factory interface drawing consistent; hold installation if the ground or structure differs from the approved assumptions.
Check ballast and overturning scenarios
For a portable hoop, require instructions stating the permitted ballast material, required mass or fill level, filling method, closure and how to verify the ballast before use. Confirm whether water and sand are alternatives or whether the design permits only a specified material. Ask about leaks, freezing, drainage and storage. Do not substitute loose weights or improvised anchors without an approved design.
Ask for stability evidence covering the permitted playing heights, backboard positions, ballast and surface conditions. Include player contact, foreseeable misuse, wind and movement in the assessment. Obtain operating and storage limits, with an action for approaching those limits. Check slopes, uneven ground, base damage and wheel locks. A demonstration on a level factory floor does not establish suitability for an exposed or sloping site.
Check adjustment, movement and production goods
Ask how the height mechanism prevents uncontrolled descent and what happens if a handle, pin or locking component is removed or fitted incorrectly. Check trapping points, accessible sharp edges, ring attachments, backboard retention and protective padding. Obtain instructions for adjustment and movement, including who may perform them, how the assembly is supported and where other people must stand.
Arrange a trial using packed production goods to check that the supplied components match the approved design and instructions. Inspect critical joints, welds, fasteners, locks and ballast closures, and record discrepancies. Our assembly instructions guide covers the wider trial procedure. Have a specialist define any load or stability testing; do not improvise a hanging or tipping test.

Accept the installed hoop before opening access
Agree a site acceptance checklist before ordering and name the person authorised to sign it. Record the installed model, support or foundation, anchors, tightening records, ballast verification, playing position, clear space and adjustment locks. Include photographs and concealed-work records where relevant. Have the installer and relevant specialist confirm conformity with the approved design. Factory inspection cannot verify your completed foundation or building attachment.
Hold access until defects are closed and the handover includes permitted-use instructions, inspection tasks, maintenance and withdrawal criteria. For equipment used at work, HSE advises inspection in line with a risk assessment. Set site-specific checks with competent advice. Stop use after leakage, looseness, cracking, unexpected movement or damaged locks, and arrange reassessment after relocation or modification before reopening access.
Frequently asked questions
Can I fit a Chinese basketball hoop to any wall?
Have a structural engineer assess the actual wall and connections against the hoop's mounting loads. Obtain an anchor and bracket design for that substrate before ordering or drilling.
How much ballast does a portable basketball hoop need?
Use the exact model's approved ballast instructions. Obtain the material, required mass or fill level and verification method in writing. Do not estimate from the base size or copy another model.
Can players dunk or hang on an imported hoop?
Ask for written permission and supporting evidence for the complete installed configuration. A flexible ring alone does not establish suitability. If the answer is unclear, hold approval for that use.
Does a factory inspection prove the hoop is safe to use?
It supports checks on the supplied goods. Require separate site acceptance of the supporting structure, mounting or ballast, completed installation and operating controls before allowing play.
