Buying tattoo or piercing equipment from China
Before buying, ask an experienced UK tattooist or piercer to review the equipment and intended use. Check batch-linked sterility evidence, sealed packs, traceable needles and inks, and an agreed sharps disposal route. If anyone else is involved, check local permissions first. Factory records can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with UK professional advice
Explain whether the project means practising on artificial skin, using equipment on yourself, or treating another person. Before ordering, ask an experienced UK tattooist or piercer to review the proposed kit, consumables and your training needs. Choose someone who can explain infection control and assess the actual products. A supplier's demonstration video is no substitute for that review.
UK Health Security Agency guidance identifies infection risks, including transmission of hepatitis B, hepatitis C and HIV. Keep initial practice to artificial materials while suitability and training remain unresolved. Ask the professional about hygiene, aftercare, allergic reactions and when to seek medical help. Purchasing checks do not establish that a home procedure is safe.
Ask what supports the sterile-pack claim
For needles and cartridges, request photographs of the actual sealed packs showing manufacturer, product identity, batch code, expiry and sterilisation marking. Ask for the sterilisation method, process validation and batch release records linked to those goods. Have a competent specialist assess the evidence. A colour indicator, sealed pouch or generic certificate alone does not establish the complete sterility claim.
Agree rejection criteria for torn, wet, opened or poorly sealed packs, missing batch codes and expired stock. Keep inspection samples separate from packs intended for use because opening them breaks the barrier. Our test report verification guide explains document checks; our factory audit guide covers the wider production and subcontracting review.
Trace needles, inks and piercing jewellery
Specify the exact needle or cartridge model, intended machine compatibility and single-use presentation. Match the manufacturer and batch across individual packs, cartons, invoice and supporting records. Ask who manufactured and sterilised the goods, including any subcontractor. For piercing jewellery, request material specifications and matching test evidence for professional review.
For each ink colour, request manufacturer identity, full ingredients, batch code, expiry, storage and opening instructions, plus matching microbiological and chemical test reports. Ask a UK product compliance adviser to assess the actual formulation for its destination and intended use. Do not use a general beauty-product file as your tattoo-ink assessment. Avoid unlabelled decanted inks and hold purchases with unresolved provenance.
Arrange sharps disposal before buying
Include an appropriate sharps container and a confirmed disposal route in the buying plan. HSE advises disposing of the needle immediately in a sharps container once the activity is complete. Keep loose sharps out of household rubbish and recycling, and keep the container away from children. Ask the receiving service which container it accepts and how to close, store and hand it over.
Some councils offer clinical waste collection. Ask your council whether it accepts tattoo or piercing sharps from your particular project, and explain whether the waste is personal or business-related. Do not assume a pharmacy or household collection service will accept it. Confirm collection arrangements and any charges before equipment is used.

Resolve permissions before involving anyone else
Before tattooing or piercing a friend, volunteer or paying customer, describe the activity and location to your council's environmental health or licensing team. Explain whether you will charge, work from home or visit another address. Ask which registration or licence, premises approval, hygiene conditions, age restrictions and consent arrangements apply. Do not assume calling it a personal project settles those questions.
For the council registration route in England, both the practitioner and premises must be registered. Ask which route applies locally, including in London; obtain destination-specific advice for Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland. Keep the council response with the product file. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can gather factory records for review. If goods appear unsafe, use our unsafe purchase reporting guide.
Frequently asked questions
Is a sealed tattoo needle pack proof of sterility?
A seal alone is insufficient. Match the pack's manufacturer, product and batch to sterilisation validation and release records, then have a competent specialist assess the evidence.
What should I ask a Chinese tattoo ink supplier for?
Request manufacturer details, full ingredients, batch codes, expiry, storage and opening instructions, and matching microbiological and chemical test reports for each colour.
Can I tattoo a friend with equipment bought from China?
Check with your council before proceeding, explaining the location and whether you will charge. Ask about permissions, premises, hygiene, age and consent, and obtain professional advice on training and equipment.
How do I dispose of tattoo or piercing needles?
Place used needles immediately in an appropriate sharps container after the activity. Arrange an accepting collection or disposal service beforehand; tell it whether the waste comes from a personal project or a business.
