Can I buy a pet microchip from China?
Possibly, but order only after a UK implanter agrees to use the exact product and a suitable database confirms it can register the chip number. Check identification standards, packaging and travel compatibility before paying. Supplier documents can be gathered by Cambridge China Bridge.

Ask your UK implanter before buying
Your pet’s microchip must be fitted by a trained professional. Ask your intended UK implanter to confirm that they are authorised to implant chips in your animal and willing to use an owner-supplied product. Send the manufacturer, model, technical sheet and packaging photographs before ordering. Ask them to scan your pet for an existing chip before discussing a new implant.
Tell the implanter where you live and whether travel is planned. Ask them to confirm the applicable local requirements rather than assuming the position is identical throughout the UK. For the wider purchase questions, see importing for your own use.
Check identification standards and the actual pack
Ask for evidence identifying the exact chip model and its conformity with ISO 11784 and ISO 11785. These are the standards named in government guidance for reading chips on approved routes into Great Britain. Have the implanter review the evidence and confirm compatibility with their reader. A supplier’s general claim of international compatibility is insufficient for your purchasing decision.
Request the encoded identification number, matching barcode labels, batch details, instructions, expiry information and evidence supporting sterility claims. Ask the implanter whether the implant and applicator are suitable for your pet. Record the accepted configuration using our product specification guide, and prohibit substitutions without your approval.
Confirm database acceptance before payment
For required registration, use a database on the government’s current list of databases meeting its standards. Before paying, send your chosen database the manufacturer, model and proposed chip number. Ask whether it accepts that number and what documents or implanter details it needs. Do not assume a readable chip will automatically be accepted for registration.
Agree who submits the registration after implantation. Ask for confirmation showing the chip number, pet and keeper details, then compare it with the number scanned by the implanter. Keep access to your database account and update your contact information when it changes. A supplier’s registration promise should be checked directly with the chosen database.
Check travel compatibility separately
For entry or return to Great Britain, the chip must be implanted before, or at the same time as, the rabies vaccination. Otherwise, vaccination must be repeated. Ask your vet to plan the sequence and check the chip number against the travel documents. Database registration alone should not be treated as confirmation that travel preparations are complete.
A non-standard chip may mean bringing your own reader; check with the travel company before departure. An unreadable chip can result in refusal of entry or quarantine on arrival in Great Britain. Before buying, ask your vet to review your intended route, destination and return journey, including any Northern Ireland arrangements.

Release the order only when the checks agree
Keep the implanter’s acceptance, database response, reviewed specifications and packing details together. Compare the complete purchase with using a chip supplied by your implanter, including implantation, registration, delivery and any extra checks. Hold the order if the supplier cannot provide traceable product information or the intended database will not confirm acceptance.
Use our import restrictions guide for separate border checks. Cambridge China Bridge’s own staff in China can gather factory records and confirm the proposed pack against your agreed specification. Ask the UK implanter and database to resolve suitability and registration questions before dispatch.
