Can I buy a dog or cat in China and bring it to UK?

Yes, in principle, but confirm the import route for the actual purchase before paying. Ask APHA whether the sale, ownership transfer and travel arrangements require commercial import procedures. Then verify the animal, veterinary records, transport and arrival arrangements. Discuss the proposed purchase with Cambridge China Bridge.

Confirm the import route before agreeing a purchase

This guide focuses on arrival in England, Wales or Scotland. Before paying, send APHA the animal’s location, seller details, proposed ownership transfer, intended destination and travel plan. Ask whether the movement qualifies for personal pet travel or requires commercial import procedures. Describe the purchase honestly rather than simply calling the animal your pet. For Northern Ireland, request destination-specific confirmation.

Commercial imports of dogs and cats must meet import health requirements and come from an approved country. Ask APHA to confirm eligibility for the proposed movement from China, including the source premises and certificate. Include the animal’s breed and any hybrid ancestry in your enquiry. Hold payment until you have a workable route confirmed in writing.

Check the seller and the actual animal

Establish whether you are dealing with the breeder, an intermediary or a transport business. Request the seller’s identity, address, animal history and veterinary records. Arrange an independent veterinary examination and a live viewing showing the animal and its surroundings. Ask about inherited conditions, behaviour, socialisation and previous treatment. A photograph or pedigree claim does not establish health.

Match the seller, invoice and payment beneficiary, and investigate discrepancies before transferring money. Our guide to avoiding sourcing scams covers payment and identity checks. Record the animal’s identifying details and agree that substitution needs your written approval. Treat refusal of veterinary access, inconsistent records or pressure to pay as reasons to stop.

Have the vet reconcile identification and documents

Microchipping must precede rabies vaccination. Ask the vet to scan the animal and reconcile the chip identifier across vaccination records, laboratory reports and the proposed certificate. Have the vet confirm the applicable vaccination, blood-test and waiting-period requirements for your route. Where the personal pet rabies blood-test procedure applies, the waiting period is 3 months from sampling before travel.

For commercial imports, the health certificate must be obtained through the exporting country’s competent authority. Ask APHA to identify the appropriate certificate, then confirm who will arrange its issue. Obtain draft paperwork and supporting records for review before final payment. Verify laboratory reports with the issuing laboratory. For a dog, have the vet confirm tapeworm treatment and its timing against arrival.

Agree transport and border handling

Personal pet travel into Great Britain is restricted to certain routes and companies. Commercial consignments from China must pass through a UK Border Control Post. Ask a specialist animal transporter to confirm the carrier, arrival point and handling arrangements for your confirmed import route. Obtain written acceptance for the particular animal before booking.

Agree the travel crate, ventilation, water, transit care, veterinary assessment of fitness to travel and arrangements if the journey changes. Name the person responsible for checking original documents, arranging any required advance notification, handling border checks and collecting the animal. Ask the transporter and arrival handler to review the paperwork together and explain what happens if an arrival check fails.

Make payment conditional on a complete plan

Put the identified animal, veterinary findings, confirmed route, document responsibilities and transport arrangements into the written purchase agreement. Agree what happens if preparation fails, the animal becomes unfit to travel or the carrier cancels. State who pays for further veterinary work, accommodation, changed transport and unsuccessful arrival arrangements. Avoid a promise of immediate dispatch before the preparation schedule has been checked.

Use our pre-payment checklist for the general payment gate and our landed-price guide to organise the full cost comparison. Keep veterinary and animal transport charges separate from the purchase price. Cambridge China Bridge has its own staff in China; ask which seller and record checks it can undertake, and which need a vet or specialist transporter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use pet travel rules for a dog I buy in China?

Do not assume so. Give APHA the sale, ownership transfer, destination and travel details before paying, and ask which import route applies.

Is a seller’s vaccination booklet enough?

Have the vet reconcile it with the animal’s chip and supporting records. Ask APHA which certificate applies. For commercial imports, obtain the health certificate through the exporting country’s competent authority.

Can the seller send my new pet immediately?

Do not agree immediate dispatch before veterinary preparation is checked. Where the personal pet rabies blood-test procedure applies, travel requires waiting 3 months from blood sampling.

What should I check before paying a deposit?

Confirm the import route, seller identity, actual animal, independent veterinary findings, document plan, carrier acceptance, border handling and written terms for failed preparation or transport.
