How to brief a factory on machine cleanability
Brief the factory with a contact-surface drawing, your product and cleaning method, access and drainage requirements, and agreed acceptance checks. Trial the built machine with representative residue, then inspect hidden areas after cleaning. Agree the evidence before ordering with Cambridge China Bridge.

Start with your product and cleaning process
Describe what the machine will handle, including sticky, oily, powdery or heat-dried residues and relevant allergen changeovers. State the cleaning chemicals, concentration, temperature, contact time, rinsing method and available utilities from your intended procedure. Ask the factory to confirm material and seal compatibility. Specify whether cleaning is manual, requires dismantling or uses circulation through the assembled machine.
For food businesses, GOV.UK says you must be able to prove that cleaning is effective. Translate that into an agreed trial and evidence plan. Use the food machinery guide for the wider sourcing and compliance checks; this brief should explain how your particular machine will be cleaned.
Map contact surfaces and hidden residue traps
Ask for annotated drawings showing the complete product path, including hoppers, pipework, valves, seals, shafts and outlets. Identify contact materials and finishes by component rather than accepting a general stainless steel description. Request close-up photographs of the actual welds, joints and seal seats, and agree how their finish will be checked.
Mark places where product or wash liquid could enter but cleaning cannot reach: behind seals, inside hollow parts, beneath scrapers, around threads and in unused pipe branches. Ask the factory to explain how each location is sealed against entry, opened for cleaning or reached by the cleaning flow. An inaccessible pocket needs a design response, not a promise to flush harder.
Demonstrate dismantling and drainage
Require a demonstration of safe isolation, removal, cleaning and refitting of the parts operators will handle. Record the tools, lifting assistance, workspace and replacement seals needed. Check that parts can be removed without damage, seal grooves can be inspected and reassembly restores guards and interlocks. Ask an intended operator to follow the draft instructions.
Test drainage in the intended installed position, including any specified cleaning position. Inspect low points, valve bodies, pipe branches and the underside of removable parts after draining. Record retained liquid and agree the remedy. Show where wash water exits and how surrounding electrical components are protected. Do not accept an outlet photograph as proof that internal spaces empty.
Trial cleaning with representative residue
Make cleanability part of the factory acceptance test. Use your intended product or an agreed representative material, with a justified substitute if shipment is impractical. Run the process so residue reaches the relevant surfaces, then reproduce the realistic delay before cleaning. A clean-water demonstration cannot establish removal of sticky or dried product.
Run the agreed cleaning procedure and record what actually happened. Inspect accessible surfaces and dismantle agreed hidden locations afterwards. Have your hygiene specialist select residue, allergen or microbiological checks where relevant, including sampling locations, methods and acceptance limits before the trial. Visual cleanliness alone cannot settle every hygiene question. Record failures, correct the cause and repeat the affected trial.

Agree the handover and shipment decision
Require a report tied to the machine identity and drawing revision, with photographs, trial conditions, cleaning settings, sampling results and unresolved defects. Obtain cleaning instructions covering inaccessible areas, dismantling, drainage, chemical compatibility and reassembly. Agree who accepts the results and which defects prevent shipment. Freeze the accepted contact parts and cleaning arrangement; assess substitutions before approval.
Use a site acceptance test to confirm the cleaning procedure with your installed utilities, operators and drainage. State which checks remain for the site rather than treating a factory trial as proof of every operating condition. Cambridge China Bridge can use its staff in China to coordinate the agreed factory demonstration and collect evidence for your review.
Frequently asked questions
Is stainless steel enough to prove cleanability?
No. Check the actual welds, joints, seals, access and drainage. Identify materials by component and demonstrate cleaning with your intended product and procedure.
What if a machine cannot be dismantled for cleaning?
Ask how cleaning reaches each enclosed surface and how effectiveness will be checked. Agree inspection or sampling access. Redesign locations where residue can enter but cannot be removed.
Can the factory test cleaning with water?
Water can help demonstrate flow and drainage. To assess residue removal, use your intended product or a justified representative material and your agreed cleaning procedure.
What should I request before shipment?
Request the machine-specific trial report, hidden-area inspection evidence, agreed test results, cleaning instructions and closure of defects that prevent shipment.
