Getting started

Are small powerful magnets from China safe?

Do not treat an adult label as proof of safety. Check who could reach the magnets, request evidence for the exact model and plan secure storage before buying. If a magnet may have been swallowed, seek immediate medical treatment. Ask Cambridge China Bridge to gather factory evidence through its own staff in China.

A magnet and iron.

Assess access, even with an adult label

Small powerful magnets swallowed separately can attract each other through the bowel. This can squeeze tissue and cut off its blood supply, causing serious injury or death. An adult label does not remove that hazard. Assess a hobby set or gift by its contents and who could reach them, rather than its catalogue category.

Ask the recipient about children at home, visiting children and shared workspaces. Consider whether loose pieces could be left on a desk, dropped or carried elsewhere. If secure use and storage are impractical, choose a gift without loose magnets. Our child toy safety guide covers the broader household checks.

Request evidence for the actual magnet set

Before ordering, request the model reference, photographs of the complete set, magnet dimensions and shape, materials, coatings, warnings and instructions. Ask for complete relevant test reports and a risk assessment addressing ingestion and foreseeable access by children. Have a laboratory or compliance adviser explain the appropriate assessment for the intended use.

Match report photographs and sample descriptions to the ordered set, including accessories and any housing that retains magnets. Ask how changes in magnet size, strength, coating or construction affect the evidence. A grade or pull-force claim describes performance; it does not answer the ingestion question. Use our report matching guide to resolve discrepancies.

Decide whether to buy or give it

Leave the purchase unresolved if the supplier provides only a certificate cover, evidence for a different model or conflicting warnings. Search government product safety alerts and recalls using the brand, model and product photographs. No matching recall is not proof of safety. For gifts, make sure the recipient understands the loose-magnet hazard before accepting the set.

If you intend to sell or supply the product through a business, review our commercial toy safety guide before proceeding. For magnet grade, coating and transport questions, use our magnet sourcing guide. Keep those performance checks separate from the assessment of swallowing risks.

Control loose pieces during use and storage

Store the complete set in a closed, secure container inside a locked cupboard that children cannot access. Include spare magnets and unfinished hobby assemblies. Keep a contents record and account for the pieces before and after use. Use a clear work surface away from food, drinks and children's play areas.

Stop use if a magnet is missing, a housing cracks or pieces come loose. Keep children away while checking the work surface, floor and nearby objects. Do not return an incomplete or damaged set to use until the issue is resolved. A search for a missing piece must not delay medical treatment if swallowing is suspected.

Act immediately if swallowing is suspected

OPSS advises immediate medical treatment if a magnet is believed to have been swallowed. For a child, go straight to the nearest emergency department or call 999 for an ambulance. Symptoms may not be obvious, so do not wait for pain or other signs. Suspected swallowing by an adult also needs immediate medical treatment.

OPSS advises that a child with suspected ingestion should not eat or drink and should not be made to vomit. Tell the medical team that small powerful magnets may be involved and explain what is missing. Do not delay getting help to complete a piece count or resolve the issue with the seller.

Frequently asked questions

Are adult-labelled magnet sets safe around children?

An adult label does not remove the swallowing hazard. Consider visiting children, dropped pieces and shared spaces. Choose another gift if you cannot keep the magnets securely inaccessible.

What safety evidence should I ask a Chinese seller for?

Request complete relevant reports and an ingestion risk assessment for the exact model. Match the magnet size, shape, materials, housing and accessories. A strength claim or generic certificate is insufficient.

How should I store small powerful magnets?

Keep the complete set and spares in a secure closed container inside a locked cupboard inaccessible to children. Account for pieces after use and stop using the set if anything is missing or damaged.

What if my child may have swallowed a magnet?

Go straight to the nearest emergency department or call 999 for an ambulance. Do not wait for symptoms. Do not give food or drink or make the child vomit. Tell the medical team that powerful magnets may be involved.
