Asbestos checks before removing old fittings
Yes, check the materials the removal and installation will disturb before work starts. If records do not cover that work, seek a competent asbestos surveyor's advice. Give installers the findings and stop if suspect material appears. Coordinate replacement specifications and factory documents with Cambridge China Bridge.

Check the work area before arranging removal
Identify what will be disturbed when removing the old fitting and installing its replacement. Include backing boards, floor layers, ceilings, service routes and proposed fixing holes. HSE advises finding out whether the affected part of the building contains asbestos and, if so, its type and condition.
Ask the landlord or premises manager for existing asbestos records and compare their coverage with the proposed work. An asbestos-free replacement does not establish that the surrounding building materials are safe to disturb. Our asbestos import guide covers checks on the new goods.
Seek a survey that covers the actual job
If records are missing, unclear or exclude the materials you will disturb, ask a competent asbestos surveyor to assess the information before booking removal. HSE says breaking into the building fabric may require a refurbishment survey. A refurbishment or demolition survey must be carried out by a competent surveyor; HSE recommends accredited surveying organisations.
Give the surveyor photographs, removal details, replacement drawings and proposed drilling locations. Ask whether hidden layers and service routes are covered, which areas were inaccessible and what further investigation is needed. Do not treat an excluded area as cleared for work.
Give installers a written handover
Before attendance, send the relevant survey findings, marked plans, unresolved areas and agreed work scope. Ask installers to confirm that their removal method and fixing positions match that information. Name the person they should contact if the site differs from the brief.
Before work likely to disturb asbestos starts, the employer must carry out a suitable and sufficient risk assessment. Ask how this has been addressed and agree a stop-work procedure. Obtain the replacement's fitting instructions before finalising the survey brief; our assembly instructions guide explains how to check those instructions.
Stop when suspect material appears
Stop work immediately if unexpected material could contain asbestos, or suspect material is damaged during removal. Put up a warning sign and keep people out of the affected area. Tell the person in charge and seek specialist advice rather than continuing to meet the installation date.
Do not sweep suspect dust or debris: HSE warns that brushing can spread asbestos. Leave sampling and any clean-up arrangements to the specialist response. Record what happened without entering the affected area, including the location, task and materials disturbed.

Agree the route to restarting
Ask the asbestos specialist and contractor to explain what investigation, controls or removal are needed before restarting. Higher-risk asbestos work must be done by a contractor holding an HSE licence. Do not assume that a general installer can undertake it.
Get a written restart decision covering the affected area and revised work method. If fixing positions or dimensions change, approve updated drawings before the factory makes the replacement. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate the factory brief; arrange the site asbestos assessment with a competent specialist.
Frequently asked questions
Do asbestos-free replacements make removal safe?
No. Evidence about the replacement does not cover old fittings or surrounding building materials. Check what removal, drilling and installation will disturb.
Is an existing asbestos survey enough?
Check its scope against the actual job. Ask a competent surveyor about hidden layers, exclusions and new fixing holes. Breaking into the building fabric may require a refurbishment survey.
What should I give the installer before starting?
Send relevant survey findings, marked plans, unresolved areas, removal details and fitting instructions. Agree the contact person and stop-work procedure.
What if the installer finds suspected asbestos?
Stop immediately, warn others and keep people out of the affected area. Tell the person in charge and seek specialist advice. Do not sweep suspect dust or resume before the work has been reassessed.
