Electrical equipment and household appliances: China GB standards vs UK and EU requirements

Hand-verified on:

Quarterly monitoring flags changes for human review. It never updates this date or the content automatically.

A dated summary, not legal advice; check the current official text. Chinese entries use freely accessible official metadata, not reproduced standard clauses. Similar test subjects do not prove that standards are equivalent. UK/EU standards must be selected for the actual product and conformity route.

Scope

GB 4943.1 covers IT/AV and communication equipment. Household appliances now have a recommended GB/T general standard alongside mandatory GB 44246; product-specific requirements still need checking.

Electrical safety rules cover equipment within the specified voltage range, with exclusions. UK plug rules apply separately where relevant.

LVD covers equipment rated 50–1,000 V AC or 75–1,500 V DC, subject to exclusions; other regimes may also apply.

Key tests and assessment

Use the correct Chinese safety standard for the equipment. Metadata establishes the subject and edition, not a clause-by-clause match to UK standards.

Request BS EN 62368-1 evidence for applicable IT/AV equipment or BS EN 60335-1 plus the relevant appliance Part 2. Confirm the designated edition and amendments and the supplied BS 1363 plug.

Use the LVD safety objectives and applicable EU harmonised standards. A GB 4943.1 report does not itself prove LVD conformity.

Marking and labelling

CCC is required only within the compulsory certification scope; the standard number alone does not decide certification scope.

UKCA or the recognised CE route for covered equipment. A Chinese plug or CCC mark does not satisfy the separate UK plug rules.

CE with an EU declaration and technical documentation under LVD; assess all other applicable EU legislation too.

Who is responsible?

For CCC catalogue products, verify the certificate holder, factory and certified configuration.

Manufacturer: conformity assessment and declaration. UK importer: verify those steps, documentation and identification before placing on the market.

Manufacturer and EU importer have separate LVD obligations, including identification, documentation and corrective action.

Official instruments and standards lists

Listed standards are starting points, not a complete test plan. Read the current official list, amendments, restrictions and removal dates. A designated/referenced standard gives a presumption only for the risks it covers.

Key differences

What to ask your factory for

  1. Request reports for your exact model, materials, colours and intended use against the applicable UK designated/referenced and EU harmonised standards. Use a laboratory accredited for the relevant tests and verify report authenticity; accreditation is a buyer check, not a universal legal requirement.

  2. Ask for the technical file or an agreed means of obtaining it, including risk assessment, drawings, bill of materials, test evidence and change control for production.

  3. Approve label and instruction artwork before production: product traceability, manufacturer identity, UK importer name/address and destination-language warnings. For EU supply, identify the EU economic operator and applicable contact details separately.

  4. Obtain a signed declaration for the chosen UKCA/CE route naming the manufacturer and exact equipment. Ask for the UK importer’s details in the pack and as an additional contact; importer identification on the product/packaging remains a separate obligation.

  5. Confirm the actual power supply, rating, cord, BS 1363 plug and fuse supplied, and obtain the applicable UK plug approval evidence.
