Getting started

Wrong CE or UKCA mark on my first batch: what now?

Hold sales and dispatch, identify the affected stock and confirm whether the exact product falls within a marking regime. Agree the correction in writing, preserve the original evidence and inspect the corrected batch before authorising release. Coordinate factory checks in China with Cambridge China Bridge.

Hold the batch and preserve the evidence

Put affected stock on hold at the factory and wherever it is stored. Pause listings and dispatch instructions, including fulfilment through other sellers. Identify the models, variants, batch references, quantities and locations involved. Ask each stock holder to acknowledge the hold in writing and name the person authorised to release it. For seasonal orders affected by the hold, see our guide to notifying wholesale customers about missed deliveries.

Before changing anything, photograph the marks on products, packaging and instructions. Save the supplied declarations, reports, artwork and listing claims in their original form. Keep an untouched sample where practical. Record whether any stock has already reached customers, so a warehouse correction does not overlook goods already supplied.

Confirm scope for the actual product

Conformity marking is only necessary where sector-specific regulations require it; not every product needs a conformity mark. HSE also states that UKCA cannot be placed on products without a specific legislative requirement. Start with our CE and UKCA explanation, then ask a competent product compliance adviser for a written scope conclusion.

Give the adviser the intended use, user group, materials, power source, functions, accessories and exact configuration. Specify Great Britain or Northern Ireland as the destination; check them separately. Ask which regimes include or exclude the product and why. Distinguish a genuinely inapplicable mark from a required mark lacking supporting evidence, and a component's documentation from evidence covering the finished product. For standards selection, see our guide to finding the correct UK product standards.

Agree the correction before reworking stock

If the scope review confirms that the mark is inapplicable, agree how to remove it from the product, packaging, instructions and sales material. If marking does apply but the evidence is deficient, resolve the assessment and documentation gaps before approving artwork. Replacing CE with UKCA without resolving scope is not a useful correction.

Issue a written rework instruction naming the affected stock, approved artwork revision, correction method, responsible parties and acceptance checks. Trial the method on a retained sample: check that removal or replacement leaves the product intact and preserves other labels and warnings. Agree costs with the seller before work starts. Our inspection corrective action guide covers managing the wider rework.

Inspect the correction and document release

Products should only be sold once compliance with product safety regulations has been appropriately demonstrated. Removing an inapplicable mark does not demonstrate that. Review the product's remaining safety, labelling and instruction requirements alongside the marking decision. Build the evidence pack using our technical compliance file guide.

Keep the scope conclusion, original photographs, approved rework instruction, revised documents, stock reconciliation and inspection findings together. Inspect corrected goods against the approved method and record unresolved failures. Separate corrected stock from untouched stock. Authorise release in writing only when the evidence and inspection support it, identifying exactly which stock is released. See closing corrective action with evidence.

Address supplied stock and prevent a repeat

If goods have already been supplied, trace recipients and seek advice from the relevant enforcement authority on correction, withdrawal or recall and notification duties. Official notification guidance covers products posing health and safety risks or found to be noncompliant. Treat any safety concern as urgent; do not assume correcting warehouse labels resolves the position for customers. For insurance considerations, see our product liability insurance guide.

Ask the factory why the mark appeared: reused artwork, an unsuitable document pack or an unchecked assumption about the product. Withdraw superseded artwork and put written scope and artwork approval into the next order's release conditions. Cambridge China Bridge's own staff in China can coordinate factory evidence, rework checks and inspection records for your release decision.

Frequently asked questions

Can I just cover the wrong CE or UKCA mark?

Confirm scope first, then approve and trial a correction method. Check the product, packaging, instructions and listings. A sticker alone does not resolve missing compliance evidence or other product issues.

Does a CE mark mean my first batch is unsafe?

The mark alone cannot answer that. Establish whether it applies to the exact product, examine the supporting evidence and assess safety separately. Hold sales while the issue remains unresolved.

Should I replace CE with UKCA?

Do not approve a swap until the scope review establishes the appropriate route. If neither mark applies, swapping symbols leaves the underlying problem unresolved.

What evidence do I need before releasing corrected stock?

Keep the written scope decision, approved correction method, revised artwork and documents, stock reconciliation, inspection results and signed release identifying the affected stock. Close unresolved findings before release.
