Costs & payment

Who pays for business electrical equipment recycling?

For non-household equipment, producers normally finance recycling of goods they placed on the market on or after 13 August 2005, and equivalent replacements of older equipment, unless alternative arrangements are agreed. Cambridge China Bridge helps buyers gather equipment details from Chinese factories.

Check whether the equipment is non-household

A business customer does not automatically put your equipment under the non-household financing rules. Assess the product's design, specification and function. Products designed for both household and non-household use must be reported as household equipment.

Keep the classification decision with the model specification. Our WEEE importer guide covers producer registration and general duties; this guide focuses on financing discarded non-household equipment.

Newer equipment follows the original producer

For non-household equipment you placed on the market on or after 13 August 2005, the default obligation covers collection, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal when it becomes waste. If you imported and supplied that equipment, budget for this responsibility unless alternative arrangements have been agreed with the business end-user.

Keep model identifiers, supply records and evidence of when the equipment was placed on the market. If you use a producer compliance scheme, confirm how it handles your non-household obligations and how customers should contact it.

Historic equipment depends on replacement

Historic equipment was placed on the market before 13 August 2005. When a business replaces it with equivalent new equipment, the producer supplying the replacement normally finances the discarded equipment, even if another producer originally supplied it. Without replacement by new equipment serving an equivalent function, the business end-user arranges and finances collection and treatment.

Before quoting a replacement, ask for the old equipment's model, function, photographs and available supply records. Record why the replacement is equivalent and agree when the customer will make the discarded equipment available. Compare the actual functions rather than relying on a matching brand name.

Agree alternative arrangements with the end-user

The default financing rules can be changed by alternative arrangements between the producer and the business end-user. An arrangement can give the end-user responsibility for the waste equipment, but it must still be collected, treated, recovered and disposed of in an environmentally sound way.

Put the agreement in writing before the sale. Identify the equipment covered, who pays, who arranges collection or return, and what records each party will keep. Ask your compliance scheme to review the proposed arrangement before promising it to the customer.

Turn the decision into a usable return process

Give the customer a named contact and instructions for requesting disposal. Ask them to provide model details, location, condition and any replacement order reference before collection is booked. Confirm the payment arrangement and return route rather than leaving the customer to guess.

Cambridge China Bridge can use its own staff in China to request model specifications and check the identifiers on supplied equipment. Keep that sourcing work alongside the end-of-life agreement. For the product's supply-stage requirements, see importing electrical goods from China.

Frequently asked questions

Do business customers always pay for recycling?

No. For non-household equipment, the default payer depends on when it was placed on the market and whether historic equipment is being replaced. An agreed alternative arrangement can change responsibility.

Must I pay for an old machine from another supplier?

Normally yes if it was placed on the market before 13 August 2005 and you supply its equivalent replacement, unless alternative arrangements are agreed with the business end-user.

Who pays if historic equipment is not replaced?

The business end-user arranges and finances collection and treatment when historic equipment is not replaced by new equipment serving an equivalent function.

Can my customer agree to handle disposal?

Yes. Producer and business end-user can agree alternative arrangements. Document the equipment and responsibilities; the agreement must still provide for proper waste collection, treatment, recovery and disposal.
