Costs & payment

Can port warehouse unloading cut container costs?

Yes, if the container charges you actually avoid exceed the extra unloading, storage, handling and onward-delivery costs. Earlier empty return alone does not prove a saving. Confirm customs release, the return depot and the contractual charging dates before booking. Share the competing quotations with Cambridge China Bridge.

Compare routes to the same delivery outcome

Devanning means unloading the goods from the container. Compare direct container delivery and empty return with delivery to a port-area warehouse, unloading, empty return, storage and onward delivery. Use the same cargo, final destination, receiving requirements and delivery window. Port proximity alone does not establish a saving.

Keep costs already incurred separate from costs the alternative route can still avoid. Include any cancellation or amendment charges. Use our landed-price guide for the wider cost structure; this comparison concerns the destination arrangements after arrival.

Establish the container charges you can avoid

Ask the shipping line or forwarder for the tariff and booking terms applying to your container. Have them identify demurrage, detention, terminal storage and any combined charging arrangement separately. Confirm each charging trigger, free-time allowance, calendar basis, rate progression and stopping event rather than relying on a charge name.

Obtain written confirmation of the nominated empty-return depot, acceptance arrangements and expected return date under each route. Ask whether earlier return changes equipment charges while terminal storage or other charges remain payable. Calculate savings from the applicable contract, and retain the depot's dated empty-return receipt.

Request an itemised warehouse and delivery quote

Send the warehouse the packing list, carton dimensions, weights, loading photographs and any handling restrictions. Ask for a quotation specific to loose-loaded or palletised cargo, including labour, equipment, unloading, counting, pallet materials, wrapping, labelling, receipt handling and empty-return transport. Our China loading-check guide explains the evidence to collect before dispatch.

Ask how storage is measured and billed, including minimum charges, billing periods, oversize goods and charges for goods awaiting collection. Obtain onward-delivery quotations covering vehicle type, delivery appointments, unloading arrangements, waiting, failed delivery and dispatch handling. Confirm exclusions, quote validity, capacity, insurance arrangements and the VAT basis across all quotations.

Confirm customs status before arranging unloading

Ask your customs agent for evidence of the goods' release to free circulation and ask the terminal to confirm collection availability. An arrival notification or a submitted declaration is not the evidence to base this plan on. HMRC requires evidence of customs-authorised release before goods can be removed from a temporary storage facility.

HMRC temporary storage allows deferral of the full import declaration and duties and taxes only while goods remain in that status. Goods declared to temporary storage must be stored in the approved area. Do not assume a commercial warehouse quotation establishes customs status or permission to handle the cargo. If release remains outstanding, ask the agent and warehouse to confirm the appropriate arrangements before booking.

Approve the saving and protect the handover

Total each route through final delivery, including its remaining container charges. The warehouse option saves money only where its total is lower. Repeat the comparison with a delayed unloading slot, longer storage and postponed onward delivery, using the quoted billing rules. If the saving disappears under a plausible delay, consider paying more for a route with firmer appointments.

Agree who books collection, unloading and empty return, who records damage or shortages, and who approves extra work. Keep container and seal details, unloading photographs, stock receipts and empty-return evidence together. Use our warehouse-transfer guide for batch continuity. Frequently asked questions

Is unloading near the port always cheaper?

No. Compare avoided container charges with all added transport, unloading, handling, storage and onward-delivery costs through the same final delivery outcome.

Does returning the empty container stop every charge?

Check the applicable terms. Ask which charges stop at accepted empty return and which remain payable. Obtain confirmation of the return depot and retain its dated receipt.

What should a devanning quotation include?

Cargo-specific labour and equipment, pallet materials, receipt and dispatch handling, storage billing, empty return and onward delivery. Ask for exclusions and charges for delays.

Can I move goods before customs release?

HMRC requires evidence of customs-authorised release before removal from a temporary storage facility. Ask your agent to confirm the permitted movement and receiving arrangements.
