Sourcing hand-held power tools from China for UK buyers
A hand-held tool is only a useful alternative when it performs the intended job safely and can be maintained. Compare task time, vibration, noise, spare parts and compliance evidence alongside the landed price.
Specify the task, compare real-use performance and check machinery evidence, vibration, batteries and spare parts before importing tools.

A strong supply base does not pick the tool
The UK imported £468m of HS4 8467 hand-held tools from China in 2025, 52% of UK imports in the family. It includes power, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, not one model or one end user. The category comparison gives the data and limitations.
For a trade buyer, define the job first: material, operation, duty cycle, target output, work environment and whether the tool is sold to consumers or used by employees. A low unit price is not useful if the tool takes longer, wears consumables faster or needs repairs the UK stockist cannot perform.
Write an acceptance test around the work
Specify torque or cutting performance under load, runtime or air consumption, weight, grip, control and guard design, compatible accessories, operating temperature and expected service life. For a cordless model, name the battery platform, cell or pack specification, charger and plug, and whether replacements will be available. State the acceptable spare parts and repair turnaround.
Trial a production-representative tool on the actual material, with the intended operator and accessories. Measure completed work and failures, not just no-load speed. Record the result against the incumbent tool so the comparison uses the same task.
| Item | Specify | Check in the trial |
|---|---|---|
| Work | Material, task, duty cycle and target output | Time and quality against the incumbent |
| Operator | Weight, grip, controls, guard, noise and vibration data | Handling, safety and real-use exposure planning |
| Continuity | Battery or air system, consumables, spares and repair terms | Runtime, failures and replacement availability |
Check safety and workplace exposure separately
Hand-held powered tools can fall under the Great Britain machinery supply rules. Obtain the declaration of conformity, English instructions, marking and technical evidence for the exact model; verify guarding and controls in the sample. Electrical, EMC and battery obligations may also apply according to configuration. A logo or another model's test report is not a product approval.
An employer buying tools for staff has separate workplace duties under PUWER and the hand-arm vibration rules. Ask for the manufacturer's vibration and noise information, but do not treat a declared laboratory value as the operator's real-use exposure. HSE advises choosing a suitable, efficient tool with lower vibration where practicable and considering practical trials.
Price the tool over its service life
Compare delivered price, batteries, chargers, consumables, warranty returns, spare parts, repair labour and downtime at the intended order quantity. A UK distributor with ready replacement tools may win this comparison, especially for a small urgent order.
Send the task, incumbent model, quantity, duty cycle, performance target, battery or air system, destination and required evidence in a sourcing enquiry. The machinery guide covers wider equipment, while the landed-price guide helps keep quotations comparable.
Frequently asked questions
Can I compare tools by wattage or no-load speed alone?
No. Test the intended job and compare task time, failure rate, operator comfort, consumables and service costs under the same conditions.
Does the declared vibration value equal a worker's exposure?
No. HSE says the tool must be suitable for the task and the employer must manage exposure in real use; practical trials and comparable emission information help selection.
What should I ask for with a cordless tool?
Specify the battery and charger configuration, UK plug, safety evidence, replacement availability and warranty process as well as the tool body.
