A strong supply base does not pick the tool
The UK imported £468m of HS4 8467 hand-held tools from China in 2025, 52% of UK imports in the family. It includes power, pneumatic and hydraulic tools, not one model or one end user. The category comparison gives the data and limitations.
For a trade buyer, define the job first: material, operation, duty cycle, target output, work environment and whether the tool is sold to consumers or used by employees. A low unit price is not useful if the tool takes longer, wears consumables faster or needs repairs the UK stockist cannot perform.

Read from the UK Trade Tariff on 29 September 2026, the lines below carried 0% to 2% on goods from China, with no anti-dumping duty. Write an acceptance test around the work
Specify torque or cutting performance under load, runtime or air consumption, weight, grip, control and guard design, compatible accessories, operating temperature and expected service life. For a cordless model, name the battery platform, cell or pack specification, charger and plug, and whether replacements will be available. State the acceptable spare parts and repair turnaround.
Trial a production-representative tool on the actual material, with the intended operator and accessories. Measure completed work and failures, not just no-load speed. Record the result against the incumbent tool so the comparison uses the same task.

Check safety and workplace exposure separately
Hand-held powered tools can fall under the Great Britain machinery supply rules. Obtain the declaration of conformity, English instructions, marking and technical evidence for the exact model; verify guarding and controls in the sample. Electrical, EMC and battery obligations may also apply according to configuration. A logo or another model's test report is not a product approval.
An employer buying tools for staff has separate workplace duties under PUWER and the hand-arm vibration rules. Ask for the manufacturer's vibration and noise information, but do not treat a declared laboratory value as the operator's real-use exposure.
