Separate alloy composition from purity

Gallium-indium-tin alloy and elemental gallium are different purchase specifications. For an alloy, state the required mass proportion of each constituent and the allowed variation. Define purity separately, including which impurities are measured and how the result is calculated. A headline purity statement cannot replace an agreed composition and impurity specification.

Describe the intended application, acceptable physical condition, sampling method, container material and required net quantity per container. Ask the supplier to identify the producer and batch, and provide a representative certificate of analysis before quoting the final order. For related materials, see gallium, germanium and minor metals.

Ask for batch evidence and a usable sample

Request the analytical method, reporting limits and results for the impurities relevant to your application. Check whether the certificate describes the offered batch or merely a typical product. If the application is sensitive, agree independent analysis and a retained sample before shipment, with clear responsibility for sampling and handling.

Approve the container, closure, labelling and dispensing arrangement using a sample. Ask how the material is protected from contamination during filling and how the container is identified after opening. Confirm order quantities, availability and production arrangements with the supplier; an online listing does not establish that exportable stock is ready for your destination.

Classify by the predominant metal and physical form

The UK Trade Tariff section notes classify base-metal alloys by the metal predominating by weight over each other metal. A gallium-predominant alloy therefore starts with gallium classification, subject to its form. The UK Trade Tariff, read on 3 December 2026 for China, showed the unwrought-material candidates below. Have your customs agent confirm the actual composition and presentation.

Both checked lines showed ordinary duty of 0% and no anti-dumping or countervailing measures on China. Conditional ship-use and airworthiness suspensions were also listed. These do not replace the classification assessment. An indium-predominant formulation must not inherit a gallium code simply because the supplier markets both products as liquid metal.

Resolve Chinese export controls before dispatch

MOFCOM Announcement 2024 No. 51 introduced the unified dual-use export control list from 1 December 2024. The list includes elemental gallium under 3C001. Ask the exporter to assess the exact material against the applicable list and document the conclusion. Do not assume an alloy is controlled, or exempt, solely because its customs heading mentions gallium.

MOFCOM's application guidance asks for the actual end user and final destination. Prepare a truthful application description and supporting documents matching the purchase. Resolve any licensing requirement before dispatch and confirm the current requirements for the proposed shipment. Cambridge China Bridge's manufacturers service can coordinate supplier questions and documentation collection.

UK REACH, transport review and receiving checks

Under UK REACH, registration generally applies when a GB legal entity manufactures or imports a substance at or above 1 tonne per year. Mixtures are not registered as mixtures, but their constituent substances can trigger registration when aggregated imports reach that level. Assess annual substance totals rather than assuming a small individual parcel settles the obligation.

Request a safety data sheet for the exact material and ask the proposed carrier to confirm transport classification, acceptable packaging and service availability. Do not book it as non-dangerous cargo from the product name alone. On receipt, reconcile seals, container condition, net quantity, batch labels and analytical documents before releasing the material for use.

Frequently asked questions

Is alloy composition the same as purity?

No. Composition describes the constituent proportions. Purity needs a defined measurement basis and impurity coverage, supported by analytical results for the supplied batch.

Does gallium content automatically decide export licensing?

The exporter must assess the exact material against the applicable control descriptions. A tariff code or commercial product name alone does not resolve control scope.

Can a small parcel be booked as ordinary cargo?

Obtain a material-specific safety data sheet and written carrier acceptance. Confirm transport classification and packing before arranging collection.
