Safe machinery maintenance visits at UK sites
Agree a written maintenance plan with the customer and visiting technician before arrival. Name who isolates and verifies each energy source, controls locks and authorises testing and restart. Record the handover before work and before return to production. Coordinate factory documents and support through Cambridge China Bridge.

Agree the visit and name the people responsible
Our installation and commissioning guide covers the initial support agreement and site preparation. For a maintenance visit, prepare a separate job brief naming the machine, fault, work boundaries, customer site contact and visiting technician. Ask for evidence of relevant training and experience, and arrange language support where needed.
Agree who identifies isolation points, operates them, verifies the safe condition, controls locks and keys, and authorises return to service. Record these names against tasks rather than writing only ‘customer responsibility’ or ‘supplier responsibility’. Ask the factory for current drawings, maintenance instructions and details of modifications before the visit.
Hand over the work area before maintenance
HSE says plant and equipment must be made safe before maintenance starts, and most maintenance should be carried out with the power off. Arrange a joint walk-through with the customer and technician before releasing the machine for work.
Use a handover record covering the machine identity, agreed work, isolation points, adjacent equipment, access restrictions and emergency arrangements. Record who has accepted the work area and any unresolved hazards. Agree a stop-work route if drawings do not match the machine or the repair scope changes. Keep production staff informed and agree barriers where people could enter the work area.
Check stored energy as well as the supply
Ask the competent maintenance team to map electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and mechanical energy for the actual machine and connected equipment. Include possible backup supplies, capacitors, pressure accumulators, springs, suspended parts and hot components. Ask how each source will be isolated and how remaining energy will be released, restrained or otherwise made safe.
Put the verification method in the job plan: who checks for absence of voltage, residual pressure or possible movement, and what evidence is recorded. Use the manufacturer's instructions to identify discharge and cooling conditions rather than inventing a waiting period. Do not accept a dark display or a stationary machine as the handover check.
Prevent unexpected restart throughout the visit
HSE says isolation should be secure so energy cannot be inadvertently reintroduced. Agree a locking arrangement that protects everyone working on the machine, with named control of keys and a clear transfer procedure for breaks, shift changes or replacement technicians. Treat a stop button, emergency stop or software command as insufficient evidence of secure isolation.
Include remote factory access, automatic sequences and signals from linked equipment in the restart discussion. Agree that production staff and remote support will not issue start commands during maintenance. If powered testing becomes necessary, pause the maintenance work and agree a separate controlled test plan with the competent team, including who clears the area and how isolation is restored before work resumes.

Record the return to service
Before releasing the machine, ask the technician and site contact to review completed work, outstanding defects, guards, safety devices, tools and people in the work area. Record who confirms readiness, who removes each lock under the agreed procedure and who authorises the controlled restart. Agree checks for the affected safety functions and the repaired fault.
If the repair is incomplete, hand back a clearly recorded unavailable machine with the agreed isolation retained. Keep the repair report, changed drawings and customer acknowledgement together. For future purchases, use machine and installation quote comparison to clarify support scope. Cambridge China Bridge's staff in China can coordinate factory documents and explanations; agree site isolation and restart authority with the customer's competent team.
Frequently asked questions
Who should isolate an imported machine?
Agree named competent people for each isolation and verification task with the customer before the visit. Record the allocation in the job plan and confirm it during the site handover.
Is an emergency stop enough for maintenance?
Do not accept an emergency stop as evidence of secure isolation. Agree how energy sources are isolated, remaining energy is made safe and reconnection is prevented.
Can the factory connect remotely during maintenance?
Agree the remote support boundaries beforehand. Control access and start commands within the site plan; any powered test needs a separately agreed arrangement and a clear return to isolation.
What should the maintenance handover record include?
Record the machine, work boundaries, isolation points, verification, lock control, unresolved hazards and named acceptance. At completion, add repair status, checks and restart authorisation.
